Commuters heading toward central parts of the national capital faced significant traffic adjustments on Tuesday morning following scheduled protest demonstrations by opposition lawmakers. In response to a coordinated march planned by parliamentarians from 19 parties belonging to the INDIA bloc, local traffic authorities issued an advisory early in the day regulating vehicular flow across the New Delhi district and cordoning off key thoroughfares around the Parliament complex and Jantar Mantar.
Key Routes Diverted Starting 8 AM
To maintain order and secure the sensitive administrative zone, traffic police put specific arrangements in place beginning at 8:00 AM. Multiple arterial stretches across central Delhi have seen vehicular movement restricted or routed elsewhere. The corridors facing active diversion and barricading include the stretch connecting Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, and Parliament Street, the route between Patel Chowk and GPO, the road running from Windsor Place to GPO, Ashoka Road, as well as the Jantar Mantar Road corridor and surrounding neighbourhood lanes.
Commuter Advisory and Travel Guidelines
To reduce inconvenience for office-goers and regular commuters passing through the heart of the city, traffic authorities recommended several precautionary measures
- Avoid unnecessary travel through the marked central corridors and adjacent zones.
- Anticipate heavy barricading, detour points, and significant road congestion throughout the morning.
- Plan itineraries well in advance and allocate additional commuting buffer time.
- Opt for the Delhi Metro and public transit networks wherever viable instead of private vehicles.
- Strictly adhere to directions provided by on-ground traffic personnel and roadside signage.
- Do not stop, idle, or park vehicles anywhere near restricted and sensitive zones.
- Cooperate with deployment teams on the ground and schedule movements accordingly.
A Three-Kilometre March to Election Commission Offices
The core trigger for the heavy security deployment is a joint sit-in and protest planned by the opposition alliance to surround the headquarters of the Election Commission of India. Lawmakers intend to cover a distance of roughly 3 kilometres on foot, starting from the Makar Dwar inside the Parliament complex and concluding outside the commission's offices. Opposition MPs gathered at the Makar Dwar at 10:30 AM before proceeding toward their destination. High-profile opposition leaders taking part include Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, alongside Shiv Sena (UBT) parliamentarians Sanjay Raut and Anil Desai representing their party.
19 Political Formations United Under Save Democracy March
Organisers designated the demonstration as the 'Save Democracy March', bringing together representatives from nearly two dozen political groups. The 19 political outfits participating in the joint procession comprise Congress, Samajwadi Party, TMC, NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), RJD, CPM, CPI, National Conference (NC), PDP, JMM, CPI-ML, IUML, KC (M), MDMK, VCK, RSP, AIFB, and KC (J), presenting a united front on the streets of the capital.
