Students at King George's Medical University hostels in Lucknow will no longer get non-vegetarian food from their mess kitchens. The university administration has banned the cooking of non-vegetarian meals inside the mess of every hostel on campus, a decision that follows an inspection carried out just days earlier.
Lapses found around the convocation ceremony
The trigger for the ban came during KGMU's 22nd convocation ceremony, which was presided over by Governor Anandiben Patel. Speaking at the event, the Governor revealed that a team from the Raj Bhavan had earlier inspected the university's hostels. During that inspection, the team found non-vegetarian food being cooked in some of the mess kitchens. In certain places, the team even found spices that had already crossed their expiry date. After pointing out these lapses, the Governor stressed on improving the quality of food served to students and fixing the overall functioning of the mess system.
All 18 hostels move to vegetarian only meals
Following the Governor's remarks, the KGMU administration acted quickly and decided that none of the university's 18 hostels would cook non-vegetarian food in their mess anymore. University spokesperson Prof. K.K. Singh confirmed the development, saying the instruction has already been communicated to all the hostels and that cooking non-vegetarian food inside the mess has now been completely stopped.
Students can still eat non-veg, just not from the mess
The new rule, however, does not stop students from eating non-vegetarian food altogether. Any student who wants non-veg can order it from outside or step out to eat it. The restriction applies only to cooking non-vegetarian food within the hostel mess, and students' personal food choices have not been curbed.
