Fans awaiting the continuation of the blockbuster sci-fi epic ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ starring superstar Prabhas finally have clarity on the timeline. Director Nag Ashwin has revealed key details regarding the production schedule, shooting dates, and the anticipated theatrical window for the sequel.
Regular Shooting Kicks Off in October
Director Nag Ashwin stated in an interview that regular filming for the second installment will commence from mid-October, now that the principal cast dates have been locked. Earlier this year, solo sequences featuring veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Amitabh Bachchan were filmed, while the team awaited final confirmation on Prabhas’s dates, which have now been secured.
Targeting a 2028 Theatrical Release
The production team aims to wrap up the extensive shoot by the middle of next year, 2027, before moving into the post-production phase. While the director noted that discussing a final release date is premature until principal photography concludes, he expressed optimism that audiences could experience the sequel in theaters by 2028.
Recent National Film Awards Recognition
The original movie recently received significant recognition at the 72nd National Film Awards, winning two honors. ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ bagged the award for Best Popular Film, and Nitin Zihani was honored with the National Award for Best Production Design. Reflecting on the accolades, the director shared pride in pulling off a sci-fi experiment that many initially considered unfeasible.
Cast Changes for the Sequel
The 2024 original feature starred an ensemble including Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone, grossing over 1000 crore rupees worldwide. However, a major casting shift occurred when production house Vyjayanthi Movies officially announced on September 18, 2025, that Deepika Padukone will not be returning for ‘Kalki 2’.
