India's flagship financial inclusion drive, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has completed 12 years of implementation since its launch in 2014, serving as a foundational pillar for expanding formal banking access across the country. From a baseline of 14.72 crore accounts recorded in 2015, the overall tally under the initiative reached 59.09 crore as of August 19, 2026. A defining feature of this nationwide drive is the strong involvement of women, who account for 32.92 crore of the total beneficiaries.
Deposit Balances Surge 20-Fold to Cross Rs 3.16 Lakh Crore
Beyond account creation, the scheme has led to a significant increase in financial savings among participating households. Total balance deposits escalated from Rs 15,670 crore in March 2015 to Rs 3,16,514 crore by August 19, 2026, marking a twentyfold growth over the 12-year timeline. This substantial increase in deposits reflects growing trust in the formal banking infrastructure and highlights the expanding participation of low-income demographics within the broader financial ecosystem.
Financial Inclusion Index Rises to 67 Amid Global Recognition
Reflecting the broader availability of banking, credit, insurance, pension, and digital payment infrastructure, India's Financial Inclusion Index rose from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 by 2026. The unprecedented scale of the drive earned global recognition early on, with Guinness World Records recognizing the campaign's record account expansion in January 2015. Additionally, international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have highlighted the initiative's impact in broadening access to formal financial services for previously unbanked populations.
Policy Shift in 2018: Expanding Target from Households to Adults
At the time of its rollout in 2014, the program focused primarily on ensuring that every household had access to at least one bank account. In 2018, the strategy was calibrated to target every unbanked adult, ensuring universal coverage. This policy shift facilitated a wider reach among marginalized and low-income groups, giving them access to essential banking services, need-based credit, remittance facilities, micro-insurance coverage, and pension frameworks.
Key Account Features: Zero Minimum Balance, RuPay Card, and Overdraft
The PMJDY account framework allows any Indian citizen to open a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account without any upper age limit. Beneficiaries are not required to maintain a minimum account balance. Individuals can apply at any commercial bank branch or Bank Mitra outlet by submitting the account opening form along with required KYC documentation. Upon verification, the bank activates the account, with options available for joint account operation. Standard bank savings interest rates apply to PMJDY accounts. Furthermore, accountholders receive a RuPay debit card bundled with accident insurance coverage that requires no premium payments from the beneficiary. Accounts operated satisfactorily over time also become eligible for an overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000.
Strengthening Economic Confidence and Social Security
The overall impact of the Jan Dhan initiative extends well beyond account numbers and deposit volumes. By establishing direct access to formal banking mechanisms, the scheme has fostered financial security and confidence among economically vulnerable communities. It has laid a robust foundation for direct benefit transfers, digital payments integration, and long-term socio-economic empowerment across urban and rural India alike.
