A critical transport artery in the Ukrainian capital has been struck as Russian forces intensify their bombardment of essential urban infrastructure. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a strike on Saturday morning hit the Northern Bridge, causing notable destruction to the road surface and bringing down overhead electrical wires used by trolleybuses. The damage forced authorities to completely halt all vehicle movement travelling from the left bank over to the right bank while emergency teams rushed to the site.
Crucial River Crossings Targeted Across the Capital
The strike on the Northern Bridge marks an alarming shift in the battle for Kyiv, as the city's key crossings over the river had avoided being hit before Thursday. Together with the Southern Bridge, this structure forms the primary transit corridor linking the eastern and western halves of the capital. Operating as vital logistical conduits, these bridges carry huge volumes of commuter and transport traffic each day. Their direct targeting signals a calculated move by Moscow to sever connections within the metropolis.
Writing on Telegram shortly after the incident on Saturday morning, Klitschko announced that the Northern Bridge had been struck and confirmed that emergency crews were dispatched to handle the aftermath. He also informed residents that traffic moving from the left to the right bank had been brought to a complete standstill. This follows consecutive drone strikes since Thursday against the Southern Bridge, also known as the Pivdennyi bridge, where a drone hit structural cables. Klitschko had earlier warned that these sustained bombardments were tearing Kyiv apart.
Crisis Response and mounting Civil Disruption
The repeated assaults on the Southern Bridge compelled Kyiv's defence council to convene an urgent crisis meeting on Friday. Addressing the outcome of those discussions, Klitschko described the capital as being plunged into a very dramatic situation. He emphasized that Moscow was relentlessly pounding the city's logistics, residential areas, critical infrastructure, and key supporting facilities, straining municipal operations to their limit.
The impact on ordinary residents caught in the strikes has been immediate and severe. Following Thursday's strike on the Southern Bridge, passengers riding transit across the span recounted how thick dust kicked up by the blast wave penetrated their carriages directly through the onboard ventilation systems. While metro rail services were temporarily suspended to verify safety, vehicular road movement was eventually permitted to resume once initial inspections concluded.
Escalating Military Exchange Over Key Facilities
Explaining the rationale behind the expanded wave of strikes, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Moscow is responding directly to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities. However, that justification comes despite Moscow having been the first party to launch widespread bombardments against civilian power and infrastructure networks. With two of Kyiv's most vital river arteries now damaged in a matter of days, the municipal network faces unprecedented logistical pressure amid intensifying hostility.
