According to ancient texts, the origin of this observance was revealed when King Yudhishthira approached Lord Krishna with deep philosophical curiosity. Having already heard the detailed narrative of Aja Ekadashi from the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada, Yudhishthira requested the divine guide to explain the identity, ritual procedures, and supreme virtues associated with the bright fortnight of the same month. Krishna elucidated that this observance, also celebrated as Vamana Ekadashi, grants spiritual merit, heavenly realms, and liberation from cyclic existence while absolving individuals of all sins.
The Ascent of King Bali and the Divine Intervention
Narrating the cosmic events of the Treta Yuga, Krishna described a mighty sovereign named Bali. Although born of demon lineage, Bali was a fervent devotee of the divine. He meticulously honored sacred Vedic hymns during daily worship, displayed profound respect toward learned brahmins, and performed extensive sacrificial rituals. However, intense rivalry with Indra prompted Bali to conquer Indraloka and assert dominion over all celestial beings. Distressed by their loss, the dispossessed deities, led by Brihaspati, sought sanctuary with the Supreme Lord, reciting Vedic prayers and offering reverent surrender. In response to their distress, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a youthful celibate scholar, appearing as His fifth incarnation to humble the great monarch.
The Request for Three Paces and the Cosmic Form
Yudhishthira then inquired how such a formidable ruler was conquered in that gentle guise. Krishna recounted approaching King Bali during a major sacrifice and requesting a piece of land measured by merely three paces of His small feet, explaining that these three paces held the significance of all three worlds. Bali consented and solemnly poured the ceremonial water to seal the donation. Immediately, the divine scholar manifested an immense cosmic form. His feet encompassed the earthly realm, His thighs reached the atmospheric sphere, His waist touched heaven, His abdomen occupied Maharloka, His heart rested in Janaloka, His throat reached Yamaloka, and His face extended into Satyaloka with His head ascending beyond.
Absolute Surrender and Eternal Fellowship
With a single stride, the Lord covered the entire earthly domain, and with the second, He encompassed the celestial worlds. When asked where the third pace should land, Bali realized the true nature of his guest and humbly offered his own head. The Lord placed His third foot upon Bali's bowed head, guiding the devoted king down into the nether realm of Patala. Deeply touched by Bali's unwavering humility and absolute surrender, the Lord promised to dwell perpetually near His devoted follower. In accordance with Bali's earnest plea, a divine idol was established at Bali's hermitage on Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi, while another sacred presence remained reclining upon Sheshanaga in the cosmic ocean.
