A 31-year-old married woman took her own life in the Undera area of Vadodara, Gujarat, in a case that has left her family devastated. Police said the woman, identified as Seema, hanged herself, and before doing so she wrote an emotional message in Hindi on her own leg. Her family alleges that harassment by her in-laws pushed her to this extreme step. Choosing to write on her own leg rather than on paper struck investigators as unusual, and the message is now being treated as a key piece of evidence in the case.
In the note on her leg, Seema wrote that she was leaving this world and wanted her husband to keep his family happy, saying she could no longer bear what she was going through. In the final line of the message, she repeated the same request, that her husband look after his family. Written in just a few words, the note offers a glimpse into her state of mind in her final hours.
Husband allegedly demanded 2 lakh rupees from her parental home for a plot
According to relatives, in May this year Seema's husband, Sunir Kumar, planned to buy a plot of land and reportedly asked her to bring 2 lakh rupees from her parental home to fund it. Her family claims that after this demand, her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law began subjecting her to continuous mental and physical torment. They allege it was this sustained harassment that eventually drove Seema to take such a drastic step, with daily friction at home becoming unbearable for her. The case came to light on 9 August, when her husband himself called Seema's sister-in-law to inform her of the suicide.
An eight-month-old daughter left without her mother
The tragedy has also upended the life of an innocent child. Seema leaves behind an eight-month-old daughter, who is now growing up without her mother. Seema's parental family has demanded justice and called for strict action against those responsible, saying no one who drove a young mother to her death should be spared and that the guilty must face the full force of the law.
Dowry and abetment case registered, investigation awaits postmortem report
Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case against husband Sunir Kumar, his mother and his father under dowry harassment and abetment to suicide charges, and have launched an investigation. Officers have collected evidence from the scene, and after completing the panchnama, the body was sent for a postmortem examination. Authorities say the postmortem report will make clear exactly how Seema died, and the investigation will be taken forward once those findings are available. Police have assured that the case is being examined from every angle and that whoever is found guilty, regardless of who they are, will be punished under the law.
Similar tragedy in Dahod four months earlier
Gujarat has seen disturbing incidents involving mothers and children before. In April this year, in two separate incidents in Dahod district, two mothers attempted to end their own lives along with their children. In both cases the mothers survived, but five children in total died. In one incident the children drowned in a well, while in the other they died after being poisoned. Both episodes underline how deeply domestic distress and mental strain can affect entire families.
