A fierce midnight gunfight broke out between the local police and armed criminals in Faridabad's Mawai area, leading to the arrest of two prominent members of an active inter-state gang. The encounter, which took place at around 3:00 AM, saw multiple rounds of bullets exchanged from both sides. During the retaliatory firing by the police team, both suspects sustained bullet wounds to their legs and were immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment. A police officer also had a narrow escape during the operation when a bullet fired by the criminals struck his bulletproof jacket.
Confrontation Near the Mawai Canal
According to police officials, a joint team consisting of Crime Branch BPTP and Crime Branch Sector 85 was patrolling near the canal in the Mawai area. Around 3:00 AM, the officers spotted a suspicious black Splendor motorcycle carrying two riders. Upon noticing the heavy police presence, the riders panicked, abruptly turned their vehicle, and attempted to flee the scene. When the alert police personnel chased them down, the suspects opened fire directly at the police in a desperate bid to evade arrest.
Retaliatory Firing and Arrests
Faced with sudden gunfire from the criminals, the police team took defensive positions and returned fire. Around five to six rounds of shots were exchanged in the ensuing shootout. One of the bullets fired by the fleeing criminals hit a police officer's bulletproof vest, preventing any fatal injury. In the decisive counter-firing by the police, both criminals were shot in their legs and collapsed on the road. The police team immediately subdued and apprehended them. The injured suspects were quickly shifted to BK Hospital in Faridabad under tight security.
A Decade of Crime in Delhi-NCR
Subsequent police verification identified the injured suspects as Sonu and Rahul, both residents of Delhi. ACP Crime Varun Dahiya stated that the duo had been actively operating in Delhi and the wider Delhi-NCR region for nearly ten years. They had been running a well-organized criminal gang specializing in armed robberies, thefts, and snatching. Dozens of criminal cases, including robbery and theft, have already been registered against them across various police stations in Delhi-NCR.
Official Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
The police confirmed that both suspects are currently undergoing medical treatment under strict police watch. They will be formally arrested and produced in court as soon as they are discharged from BK Hospital. Investigative teams are now looking into the suspects' involvement in recent crimes committed in Faridabad and nearby districts. Additionally, the police are interrogating them to uncover information about other active members of their gang and their wider criminal network in order to dismantle the syndicate.
