The Glass Surface Drop Test
Place a single drop of milk onto a clean, dry glass surface and allow the droplet to flow downward. If the milk moves sluggishly and leaves a distinct white trail behind it, this behavior may indicate the presence of solid contents. Conversely, if the droplet runs downward very rapidly, it typically points toward a high water content diluting the liquid.
Boiling and Cooling Observation
Boil the milk using standard kitchen methods and subsequently let it cool down completely. Pure milk generally develops a layer of cream upon boiling, but the exact thickness of this cream layer depends heavily on the specific type of milk and its natural fat content. Therefore, judging milk as entirely pure or adulterated solely based on the cream layer is misleading.
Iodine Testing and Laboratory Safety
Laboratories frequently perform iodine tests to detect specific adulterants in milk. Conducting chemical tests at home without proper knowledge, correct procedures, and adequate safety gear is unsafe. Utilizing dedicated food testing kits or consulting an authorized laboratory remains a much better alternative for such chemical examinations.
Checking Odor, Color, and Taste
Examine the smell and visual appearance of the milk prior to consumption. If the liquid emits a strange odor, displays an altered color, or tastes noticeably different from normal, avoid drinking it altogether. Sourness does not always signify adulteration, as milk can also spoil simply due to improper storage temperatures.

Before purchasing packaged milk, verify that the carton or pouch features a valid FSSAI license number, manufacturing and expiry dates, storage instructions, and proper labeling. Refuse to buy any packet that appears bloated, leaks liquid, or shows signs of damage. Even after purchase, storing the milk strictly at the recommended temperature specified on the packaging is vital.
