Former IIT Mandi Student Arrested for Thefts at NIT Hamirpur Hostels After Heavy Online Gaming Losses

A youth from Delhi turned to stealing cash and electronic gadgets across NIT Hamirpur hostels using a forged ID to recover money lost in online games.

Security arrangements at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur were breached after a former university student infiltrated student residences to carry out thefts across dormitories. The suspect targeted rooms in the Himgiri and Udaygiri hostels, decamping with cash and personal electronics. Upon his capture, police recovered Rs 21,510 in physical currency, along with a laptop, a mobile phone, and other stolen items.

Staff Apprehended Intruder During Routine Hostel Inspection

Police identified the arrested individual as Aditya Choudhary, a resident of Block E, Om Vihar, Phase 5, Uttam Nagar in New Delhi. The security breach came to light during an inspection of Himgiri hostel conducted by attendant Gurbhag Singh, a resident of Janayankar in Kangra, alongside mess manager Tej Kumar. The duo spotted Aditya stepping out of room number G-54 under suspicious circumstances. When questioned about his identity and purpose in the residential building, he failed to offer any credible explanation, leading staff to detain him and alert law enforcement.

Hard to digest that an IIT-educated guy resorted to stealing just because of online gaming. Roaming around with a fake ID and knowing the hostel layout inside out feels a bit odd, police should definitely check if someone else was involved.

Karan, you've got a point. From UP to Himachal, the addiction to online gaming among youth has grown so much that even IIT students are turning to crime to cover their losses.
