A distressed outsourced worker stationed at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital in Nerchowk, the premier healthcare facility in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, consumed an overdose of medicines after losing his employment. Serving as an outsourced ward boy at the medical facility, he was immediately admitted to the very same institution where medical staff are providing intensive care. The incident has spotlighted the precarious conditions faced by contractual staff and the severe impact of sudden employment termination within regional healthcare centres.
Health deteriorated at rented residence before alerting family
The individual who attempted the desperate act has been identified as Balwant Singh, a resident of Ghiundhar in Rewalsar. For his job commitments, Singh had been living with his family in rented accommodation in Bhangrotu while reporting for duty at the Nerchowk medical college. According to investigators, Singh unexpectedly ingested a heavy dose of various medicines on Monday evening. As his physical condition deteriorated rapidly, he disclosed what he had done to his wife. Panicked family members quickly rushed him to Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College in Nerchowk, where doctors commenced emergency medical intervention.
Police recover suicide note amidst reports of 13 dismissals
Following information regarding the incident, police authorities arrived at the healthcare facility to initiate a formal inquiry into the circumstances. During preliminary procedures, law enforcement officials recovered a suicide note from Singh's pocket, which explicitly cited deep mental agony stemming from his sudden dismissal from work. Initial findings suggest that nearly 13 workers deployed through the outsourcing intermediary had recently been discharged from their positions at the medical establishment, leaving their livelihoods in complete jeopardy.
Accusations against agency supervisor and contractor over unpaid distress
From his hospital bed, Balwant Singh leveled serious allegations of persistent harassment against the contractor and supervisor representing the private outsourcing agency. Singh stated that he had been subjected to constant distress over the preceding month, adding that the abrupt loss of livelihood left his family without food, forcing them to go to sleep hungry on multiple nights. He expressed deep anguish that repeated appeals made to the administration to redress their suffering had been completely ignored. Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that police authorities received official information regarding the incident and stated that a probe is underway strictly in accordance with established legal procedures.
