The long-dormant sci-fi franchise Stargate is gearing up for another journey across the cosmos, with WandaVision mastermind Jac Schaeffer taking the reins. Working under her overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Schaeffer is currently developing an entirely new Stargate television series destined for Prime Video, aiming to transport audiences back through the franchise's iconic ring-shaped portals.
Creative Team and Production Details
A writers' room for the upcoming production is anticipated to open in the near future. The series has also enlisted seasoned genre producers to shepherd the vision alongside Schaeffer, with the producing duo of Joby Harold, known for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Tory Tunnell of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters serving as executive producers. Narrative details remain tightly guarded for now, leaving it unclear whether this fresh iteration will retain continuity with the 1994 Kurt Russell feature film or popular canon entries like Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate: Universe.
Renewed Momentum After Previous Cancellation
This development marks a swift shift in strategy for the property. Last November, an earlier attempt to resurrect the universe was unveiled under franchise veteran and Blindspot creator Martin Gero. However, that initiative was abruptly scrapped roughly seven months later before cameras could ever roll. Schaeffer's arrival signals a complete reboot of Amazon's development pipeline for the brand.
Reviving Classic Sci-Fi in a Competitive Landscape
The project arrives during a prolific era for ambitious small-screen speculative fiction, flanked by modern entries such as Alien: Earth, The Expanse, Foundation, Silo, 3 Body Problem, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. After spending roughly 16 years largely inactive on television, Stargate's return could provide a major anchor for Prime Video's slate. Schaeffer has already demonstrated a keen mastery of high-concept genre storytelling within the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Disney+ hits WandaVision and Agatha All Along, positioning her well to revitalize the legacy property.
