In the Gumo locality under Jhumri Telaiya Municipal Council of Jharkhand's Koderma district, monsoon rains used to bring persistent hardship for daily wage earner Ajit Ravidas and his family. Rainwater leaking through their fragile tiled roof forced family members to place kitchen utensils across the floor to prevent water damage, spending sleepless nights in distress. On an uncertain daily wage, managing food, elderly parents, and children left no scope to save money for building a durable brick house. That precarious situation turned around following assistance under the central government's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, providing the family with a permanent roof over their heads.
Construction Labourer Who Built Homes for Others Realises His Own
For years, Ajit Ravidas earned his living on construction sites, carrying sand, cement, and bricks to erect structures for other people. Work opportunities remained irregular, leaving the household budget constantly stretched simply meeting immediate sustenance needs. Under such tight financial constraints, investing in a permanent residential structure was financially out of reach.
Around four years ago, Ajit learned about the provisions of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Seeking a way out of his housing vulnerability, he submitted his formal application through the local ward councillor. Alongside the form, he submitted vital documentation, including his Aadhaar card and land registry records (khatian), to verify his ownership and eligibility.
Site Inspection and Phased Construction from Foundation to Tie Beam
Once his name featured in the municipal approval list, a field verification team representing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana from the municipal council arrived at Gumo. The officials conducted a physical inspection of his land and checked the condition of the dilapidated tiled structure. Following document clearance and field validation, administrative approval was formally granted to his file.
The initial instalment of Rs 45,000 was credited directly to his bank account soon after. Ajit utilized these initial funds to dig the foundation and cast the structural tie beam for the proposed building. An assigned supervisor then conducted a follow-up site visit to inspect construction progress and document the structure through photographs, clearing the way for subsequent disbursements as construction advanced.
Total Grant of Rs 2.25 Lakh Eliminates Monsoon Distress
Over the entire building timeline, Ajit Ravidas received an aggregate financial support of Rs 2,25,000 released in four distinct instalments tied to construction milestones. Leveraging this assistance, he completed a pucca house featuring two rooms, an open hall, and a permanent staircase leading to the roof slab.
The shift to a permanent structure has resolved the severe disruptions the family endured during heavy downpours. In their previous dwelling, water seeped into living quarters, routinely damaging stored food grains and clothes while raising constant safety worries for the children. With construction complete, the family lives securely across all weather conditions, and Ajit has expressed his gratitude to the central government for the financial backing that made his permanent residence possible.
