A deeply shocking case has come to light from Dharwad district in Karnataka, sending ripples of outrage through the local community. In Hanasi village, Navalguund taluk, a 29-year-old woman named Priyanka Kamalakar was allegedly strangled to death by her own husband. The incident has reignited urgent questions about domestic violence, dowry harassment, and the fatal consequences of body-shaming within marriages.
A 2024 Marriage That Quickly Turned Abusive
Priyanka Kamalakar married Basavaraj Vaddar in 2024. Police say that harassment began almost immediately after the wedding. She was repeatedly pressured to bring gold and money from her parents' home to meet dowry demands. Her husband and members of his family also constantly taunted her about her weight. The accused allegedly went so far as to tell Priyanka that because of her obesity, she would never be able to become a mother. This case is being linked to a combination of dowry harassment, domestic violence, and discrimination over body weight.
Crime on Monday Night, Discovered Two Days Later
According to police, Basavaraj strangled Priyanka to death on Monday night. What makes the case even more alarming is that the crime went undetected for two full days before it came to light. Once the case surfaced, police registered a complaint at Navalguund Police Station and launched a formal investigation.
Four Arrested, Strictest Punishment Assured
Police have arrested four accused individuals in connection with this case. Along with the main accused, Basavaraj, the others taken into custody are Renawwa, Subhash, and Siddharamesh. Authorities have stated clearly that the guilty will face the strictest possible punishment. The investigation remains ongoing.
Allegations of Mental and Physical Abuse Throughout the Marriage
Preliminary findings have revealed that Priyanka was subjected to both mental and physical abuse during her marriage. Family members of the accused routinely humiliated and mocked her about her body weight. Police are now working to determine whether the murder was premeditated or whether it occurred in the course of a domestic dispute.
