Continuous downpours over the central and northern regions have caused rivers to breach their banks, inundating towns and stranding communities. The natural calamity has claimed at least 3 lives so far, with several others injured or trapped under debris as rescue crews battle adverse weather conditions. The landslides have obliterated residential structures in Idukki and Kottayam districts while severing key transportation corridors and national highways. In response to the intensifying disaster, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for 8 districts predicting extremely heavy rainfall, alongside an Orange Alert for 3 neighboring districts.
Devastating Landslides and Emergency Rescue Operations in Idukki
The high-altitude district of Idukki has emerged as the worst affected region, bearing the brutal brunt of torrential rains and collapsing hillsides. Early Saturday morning, a massive landslide struck the Adurmala area, where torrents of mud and rock cascaded down the slopes onto a residential house, completely crushing the structure. A woman identified as Sumathi, a resident of Adurmala, died on the spot after being trapped beneath the rubble. Local residents acted swiftly following the disaster, managing to pull Sumathi's husband, Ravi, and their son alive from the debris. Both individuals suffered severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility in Thodupuzha for urgent emergency treatment.
Following notifications of the disaster, a joint emergency response team comprising the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Services, local police personnel, and revenue department officials converged on the site to execute an intensive search and rescue mission. After hours of clearing debris, rescue workers recovered Sumathi's body. In another fatal incident in Idukki's Vagamon locality, a landslide claimed the life of Prabhakaran Nair, a native of Vaikom. Rescue workers in Vagamon are also engaged in an ongoing effort to extract another individual reported trapped inside a damaged residential property following a landslide impact.
Road Disruption, River Overflow, and Dam Management in Idukki
The movement of traffic across Idukki has come to a complete halt due to extensive mudslides dumping rocks and debris across key arteries. The vital transit route connecting Kattappana and Vazhavara has been entirely closed to vehicles as road clearers work to remove large debris piles. Simultaneously, the Pullakayar river overflowed its banks, submerging the low-level bridge at Kokkayar. Floodwaters rapidly entered surrounding residential dwellings, forcing emergency personnel to evacuate affected families to safer locations and temporary relief camps.
Transportation on National Highway-183 (NH-183) was paralyzed in the Vandyperiyar area after the Chottupara stream overflowed, submerging the highway in deep water. Furthermore, vehicular traffic on the Nellimala route came to a standstill due to debris accumulation. To manage rising water storage and mitigate potential downstream risks, the Idukki district administration took the precautionary measure of opening the spillway gates of smaller dams across the district.
Severe Inundation and Tragic Casualty in Kottayam District
In neighboring Kottayam district, intense rainfall has brought severe distress to low-lying and township areas. Widespread waterlogging was reported following overnight downpours in Erattupetta, Kanjirappally, Koottickal, and Erumely. Commercial areas and residential neighborhoods were inundated, disrupting normal life and leaving vehicles stranded. Disaster management teams intensified rescue and relief efforts across all affected zones to assist affected citizens.
A fatal landslide occurred at Payyanithottam in the Poonjar area of Kottayam, causing a residential home to collapse. Joseph, the son of Johny, was pulled out from under the heavy mud and debris by rescue workers. However, officials confirmed that Joseph passed away while being transported to the hospital. Search teams continue to work at the scene to locate Joseph's mother, who remains buried underneath the landslide debris.
Erattupetta Town Flooding and Highland Emergency in Pathanamthitta
In Erattupetta town, water levels escalated rapidly during the overnight hours, prompting administrative officials to halt all vehicular movement through the urban center for safety. Floodwaters surged into homes across several neighborhoods, including Nadakkal and Murikkoli. Emergency responders, working in coordination with local volunteers, utilized ladders and small boats to rescue residents trapped on the upper floors of flooded houses, as ground floor levels became submerged.
Hilly areas in Pathanamthitta district also reported multiple instances of landslides and severe waterlogging. Ranni MLA Pazhakulam Madhu shared details on social media indicating that a critical flood situation has developed across Ranni and neighboring areas, where rising waters have entered residential zones, requiring urgent rescue and relief interventions.
IMD Weather Alerts and Administrative Safety Measures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over extensive portions of Kerala. Highlighting the severity of the weather system, the IMD has declared a Red Alert for 8 districts: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Additionally, an Orange Alert has been sounded for 3 districts: Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. In response to the high risk of further flooding and landslides, district authorities have placed disaster response units on standby, advised residents living in vulnerable hillside locations to relocate to safety, and declared a holiday for schools across several affected districts on Saturday.
