A tragic accident occurred at the holy pilgrimage town of Omkareshwar in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, where two young men from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh lost their lives after drowning in the Narmada River. The unfortunate incident took place at the prominent Gomukh Ghat, where both visitors slipped while taking a bath and were pulled into the deep currents of the river. The sudden mishap triggered chaos and panic among other pilgrims and local residents present along the riverbank.
Slipping on Steps Leads to Deep Water Tragedy
The deceased individuals were identified as Saurabh and Aman, both residents of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. They had travelled to Omkareshwar to offer prayers and bathe in the sacred river. While bathing at Gomukh Ghat, their feet slipped unexpectedly, causing them to lose their balance and get swept into the deep section of the water. Before bystanders could realize the gravity of the situation or extend any immediate help, both youths went completely underwater. The sudden drowning sparked immediate distress and shouting across the ghat as onlookers realized the young men were unable to resurface.
Divers Recover Bodies Following Rapid Rescue Effort
Upon receiving word of the incident, Omkareshwar Police Station In-charge Anokh Singh Sindhia rushed to the site along with a police team. Recognizing the urgency, the police immediately directed local divers to launch an intensive search and rescue operation in the deep waters. Divers combed the riverbed near Gomukh Ghat and eventually managed to retrieve the bodies of both youths. The police subsequently took custody of the bodies and transferred them to the mortuary for post-mortem examinations, initiating standard legal formalities.
Recurring Hazards and River Safety Concerns
The tragedy has once again highlighted the acute dangers of entering deep water zones along the riverbanks of the pilgrimage town. Such accidents have taken place at the Narmada River on multiple occasions in the past, raising pertinent questions about preventative safety measures. Earlier, a terrifying situation unfolded right opposite Gomukh Ghat in Omkareshwar when the engine of a moving boat caught fire in the middle of the river, sending passengers into extreme panic as flames erupted. Such water-related incidents have occurred elsewhere along the river as well, including in Jabalpur district on 27 June 2026, where three young men drowned at Dadda Ghat in the Tilwara area. Following the latest tragedy at Gomukh Ghat, local police are proceeding with the required statutory procedures.
