A heartbreaking case has emerged from Thane district in Maharashtra, where a minor student ended his life after failing to secure a seat at the engineering institute he had set his heart on. What makes the case even more shocking is that the student had scored 95.7% in his Class 12 science board exams, yet that could not get him into the college of his choice.
Who was the student
Police disclosed details of the case on Monday. According to them, the deceased was a minor who lived with his family at the Hiranandani Estate complex on Ghodbunder Road in Thane. After clearing Class 12, he had been hoping to join the Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, for a dual BS-MS degree, a prestigious five-year integrated programme.
Why the admission slipped away
Despite his stellar Class 12 score, the student ranked only 10,474th in the entrance examination required for admission to the institute. That rank was not enough to secure him a seat at the college he had been aiming for, and police said this setback left him deeply disappointed. Family members and neighbours have been left in shock, since a student who scored as high as 95.7% still could not make the cut because of the rank gap in the entrance test.
Investigation still underway
Police have so far released only these details, and the case remains under investigation. More facts are expected to emerge as the probe continues. The incident has left the neighbourhood in shock, with many raising concerns about the mounting pressure on students during the college admission season.
