A massive explosion ripped through a steel manufacturing facility located in the Tarapur industrial area of Palghar, Maharashtra, on Monday, sending shockwaves through the entire neighborhood. The violent blast left a factory worker injured, who is currently receiving medical treatment at a private hospital. Following reports of the incident, senior police officials rushed to the scene to inspect the premises, while the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health has initiated a formal inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Blast at the Viraj Profiles SMS Plant
According to available details, the incident took place around 10:45 am on Monday inside the Viraj Profile SMS plant situated within the Tarapur industrial estate. Steel melting operations were underway inside the furnace when the sudden and violent blast occurred. The accident injured a 45-year-old crane operator named Dharmendra Kumar Ramawadh Sharma. He was swiftly moved to Starlight Hospital in Boisar, where medical professionals are currently treating him for his injuries.
Safety Alarm Averts Major Catastrophe
The impact of the explosion was so tremendous that it rattled not just the Viraj Profile factory but the entire surrounding vicinity. The force of the blast blew the corrugated tin sheets off the factory roof, sending them flying over considerable distances, while window panes in neighboring factories shattered completely. Panicked workers immediately bolted toward the street outside to escape the danger zone. Fortunately, a hazard warning alarm sounded roughly two minutes prior to the explosion. Because the staff evacuated the floor as soon as the alarm rang, a major loss of life was averted.
Authorities and Safety Officials Inspect Scene
Upon receiving word of the emergency, the Tarapur fire department team promptly arrived at the location. Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh, the sub-divisional police officer, and Police Inspector Sunil Jadhav also visited the factory to assess the situation firsthand. Meanwhile, inspectors from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health commenced a thorough investigation on-site to uncover the sequence of events that led to the furnace failure.
District Disaster Management Statement
Vivekananda Kadam, head of the district disaster management cell, elaborated on the incident, stating that the blast occurred within an induction furnace at the steel-melting unit of Viraj Profiles Private Limited in the Boisar industrial zone. He noted that the explosion damaged several roof sheets of the plant shed and left a 45-year-old crane operator with minor injuries. Kadam added that emergency response teams provided immediate assistance on-site before transferring the injured worker for further medical care, while local emergency services and industrial safety officials continue probing the root cause of the accident.
