A shocking and tragic incident has shaken the Palghar district of Maharashtra, where five students from a residential school sneaked out of their hostel to attend a local village fair. While returning to their campus, their motorcycle skidded and plunged into a roadside ditch, resulting in the deaths of two students and leaving three others seriously injured. The accident took place in the early hours of Monday within the Jawhar taluka, prompting immediate administrative action and widespread public concern over campus security.
The Fatal Crash During Return From The Fair
According to an official from the Jawhar police station, the students secretly left their hostel premises and rode together on a single motorcycle. Between 2:30 AM and 3:00 AM on October 19, while heading back to the school, their vehicle met with a severe accident near the Kongdi Ghat area. The crash claimed the lives of two students, identified as Sumit Motiram Bhingal (18) and Pritam Ganesh Potinda (15), while three of their companions sustained critical injuries in the mishap.
Hospitalization And Questions Over Hostel Security
Police officials stated that a passing motorist noticed the accident scene and promptly alerted the Jawhar police, who rushed to the location and shifted the injured victims to a cottage hospital in Jawhar. Due to their deteriorating and critical condition, the injured students were subsequently referred to a hospital in Nashik for advanced medical care. The tragedy has raised serious questions about how the five students managed to slip past the headmaster, hostel warden, and night watchman during the middle of the night without anyone noticing their absence.
Investigation Reveals Major Lapses And Notices Issued
An inquiry conducted by an Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) investigation committee uncovered massive security loopholes at the institution. The report revealed that unauthorized external students who were not official residents were allowed inside the hostel, and CCTV cameras had remained broken despite prior warnings issued to the administration. Viewing the tragic incident with extreme gravity, the ITDP Project Officer and Jawhar Assistant Collector issued formal show-cause notices to the school management, headmaster, warden, and the security watchman.
Demands For Criminal Proceedings Against Management
In the wake of mounting public pressure and glaring security vulnerabilities, the institution suspended the headmaster, warden, and watchman. Meanwhile, a local organization has demanded that criminal cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) be registered against the headmaster, hostel warden, night watchman, and management trustees to ensure accountability for the lives lost.
