A bomb blast triggered alarm in Manipur's Imphal West district early Friday morning after an explosion occurred within the residential premises of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and government spokesperson Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh. According to police reports, the incident took place around 1:30 am on August 28, 2026, at the rear of the lawmaker's house in the Konthoujam constituency. No injuries were reported, though the blast caused minor structural damage to the compound wall and left a small crater in the ground.
Midnight Blast Inside Lawmaker's Compound
Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh and his household were inside the property when the explosion occurred. The sound of the blast alerted the occupants, after which law enforcement authorities were immediately informed. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after midnight to secure the perimeter and initiate preliminary investigations into the cause and scale of the explosion.
Reflecting on the terrifying moment, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh stated, "Ultimately, we came to know that the blast had taken place behind my house, within my residential campus." Law enforcement officials confirmed that while the explosion shook the surrounding area, structural impacts were limited to minor cracks along the boundary wall and physical displacement of soil.
Chief Minister Inspects Site and Vows Action
Following the early morning incident, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the MLA's house at Konthoujam Mayai Leikai on Friday afternoon to assess the damage firsthand. The Chief Minister surveyed the affected area of the campus and spoke with investigators regarding the progress of the probe. He denounced the blast as a senseless act of aggression directed at an elected official.
Expressing his condemnation, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh wrote on X that such targeted violence represents a grave assault on democratic principles. He assured the public that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing those responsible and that the perpetrators will face prompt legal consequences.
Forensic Examination and Security Measures
Police personnel along with forensic specialists have collected samples from the blast site to determine the composition of the explosive device used in the attack. Security patrols have been intensified around Konthoujam and adjacent neighborhoods in Imphal West as authorities work to track down the individuals behind the midnight explosion.
