Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has firmly rejected allegations that the National People's Party (NPP) is orchestrating defections to expand its footprint across the state, asserting that lawmakers entering the ruling fold are doing so entirely out of personal choice. Speaking to reporters on Monday following the swearing-in of Paul Lyngdoh into the state Cabinet, the Chief Minister maintained that the growing strength of the NPP is the natural result of solid working partnerships developed over multiple years of governance.
Coalition Dynamics and Mutual Understanding
Addressing the shifting political landscape, Sangma stated that legislators who collaborated closely with the NPP inside the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) administration built a mutual working dynamic over time. That shared operational understanding, he noted, eventually guided their voluntary decision to formalize ties with the party. He dismissed assertions that the ruling party was systematically working to undermine its governing allies, emphasizing that the NPP continues to maintain constructive relationships across the coalition and harbors no motive to weaken partner organizations through tactical maneuvers.
The Chief Minister also cleared the air regarding the exit of United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Metbah Lyngdoh from the ministerial council. Sangma made it clear that no external pressure was applied on Metbah Lyngdoh to resign, confirming that the departure was an entirely personal choice. He reiterated that the administration does not anticipate further political reorganizations at this point and remains confident in finishing its legislative tenure under the current Cabinet composition.
Upcoming District Council Entries and Assembly Stability
Sangma revealed that three Trinamool Congress (TMC) members representing the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) are scheduled to formally take up NPP membership on November 4. At the same time, he pointed out that no parallel developments involving TMC members of the legislative assembly are anticipated in the immediate period. The administration expects stability following the induction, maintaining smooth functioning across departments.
Tourism Priorities and the Shillong Ropeway Initiative
Following his induction, minister Paul Lyngdoh is widely anticipated to take charge of the tourism portfolio, a responsibility he has handled in the past. Lyngdoh highlighted the revitalisation of Meghalaya's travel and hospitality sector as an urgent focus, while also taking note of the apprehensions raised by various groups over the proposed Shillong ropeway venture.
Weighing in on the ropeway dispute, Sangma stated that the government stays receptive to continuous consultations with local stakeholders but emphasized that the project itself must move forward. He noted that the initiative holds significant economic promise, with the capacity to generate direct employment for hundreds of local youth while creating indirect livelihoods for thousands more residents across the surrounding region.
Faith Initiatives and Joint Parliamentary Committee Deliberations
In a bid to celebrate faith traditions and preserve indigenous cultural expression, the Chief Minister made known plans to stage two gospel concerts in close partnership with regional religious bodies: the Presbyterian Church across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills and the Baptist Church situated in the Garo Hills.
Alongside political and infrastructure developments, Sangma welcomed the recent Shillong consultation convened by the Joint Parliamentary Committee regarding the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Over the course of the proceedings, committee members engaged in structured dialogue with nearly 40 civic and social organizations, an interactive exercise that Sangma characterized as a healthy and positive reflection of parliamentary democracy.
