Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has firmly put an end to rumors regarding an impending ministerial overhaul in the state. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he clarified that no deliberations regarding ministerial inductions or changes have occurred at any administrative or political level, describing the buzz as mere conjecture.
Speculation Around Ministerial Berths Dismissed as Baseless
Addressing the circulating claims about potential changes in the council of ministers, the Chief Minister maintained that there was no cause for concern. He emphasized that the talk originated purely from public speculation and unfounded assumptions. Sangma told reporters,
There has been no induction, no discussion at all. With this clear denial, he sought to quell ongoing media commentary suggesting an imminent restructuring of key departments or portfolios within the state government.
Political Shifts Following Defections From UDP to BJP
The intense political chatter began after eight United Democratic Party legislators switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party on September 23. This mass transition dramatically altered the legislative balance within the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly, boosting the BJP contingent from two to 10 members. Consequently, the party emerged as the second-largest political force in the House, behind only the National People's Party. Following the development, unconfirmed claims suggested that incoming legislators might be rewarded with significant cabinet portfolios, though no formal confirmation ever materialized.
NPP Holds Absolute Majority With 33 Legislators
Sangma stressed that the internal transition among allies does not impact the stability or authority of the ruling NPP. With 33 legislators of its own in the 60-member House, the party maintains a comfortable independent majority. The Chief Minister dismissed unverified claims that the BJP might attempt to split the NPP to form an alternative administration, highlighting that the numbers speak for themselves. He pointed out that had the NPP desired to govern entirely alone, it possessed the numerical strength to drop every coalition partner during the previous cabinet reshuffle.
MDA 2.0 Stability Intact Under Collaborative Spirit
The Chief Minister noted that NPP leadership was scheduled to convene later on Tuesday, with full attendance expected across party ranks. Reflecting on the coalition dynamics, Sangma explained that while the seat distribution between individual partners in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 has shifted, the collective strength of MDA 2.0 remains unchanged. Describing friction between the two allies as an internal issue beyond his comment, he observed that mistrust would only be justified if lawmakers had defected to the opposition or outside the ruling alliance, whereas this realignment occurred entirely within existing partners functioning in a spirit of mutual cooperation.
