Preparations for the 39th National Games in 2027 have gained significant momentum as Meghalaya actively engages with the central government for comprehensive administrative and financial backing. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla called on Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya at his official residence to place key infrastructure requirements and resource proposals on the table.
Review Following Exposure Visit to Japan
Minister Wailadmiki Shylla was joined in the discussion by Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) president John Kharshiing. The delegation had recently returned from an official exposure visit to the 20th Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Drawing from their observations of international sporting standards and logistical execution abroad, the officials underscored the need to establish robust mechanisms in Meghalaya well ahead of the 2027 sporting spectacle.
Finalising Disciplines Through Early GTCC Formation
A central pillar of the meeting revolved around the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC), which must be formally constituted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The state government appealed for immediate action from the IOA on this front, pointing out that finalizing the complete roster of sports disciplines is contingent upon the committee's formation. Establishing these disciplines is vital for planning, as venue development, ground specifications, and general logistics depend directly on which sports are hosted.
Call for Financial Support and Next Administrative Steps
Alongside technical protocols, the delegation highlighted the need for supplemental funding from the Union Ministry to upgrade sports complexes and ensure world-class operational readiness. Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya responded by directing the state to present further documentation covering current preparedness and project outlines. He also assured the delegation that a coordination meeting between Union Sports Ministry officials and IOA representatives will be scheduled soon to push the preparations forward.
