Efforts to strengthen elementary schooling in Mizoram are moving forward with major institutional reforms and fresh classroom appointments. Addressing the annual general conference of the Mizoram Primary Teachers' Association in Aizawl, Education Minister Vanlalthlana outlined a roadmap to recruit 100 regular primary school teachers within the current year, alongside strategic steps designed to elevate student academic performance across the state.
Rethinking Assessment to Target Real Learning
Addressing the state's standing at 31st place nationally on the Performance Grading Index, the minister underscored that improving classroom outcomes remains an urgent priority. To replace conventional memorisation habits with deeper conceptual understanding, the administration has rolled out the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools. This evaluation model assesses whether students genuinely comprehend their coursework rather than simply committing lessons to memory.
Reforms in Teacher Eligibility and In-Service Pathways
The government has sanctioned the appointment of 671 teaching posts overall, with the immediate drive focused on bringing 100 permanent primary educators into schools this year. Meanwhile, the Mizoram Board of School Education is working on arrangements allowing in-service educators with more than five years of remaining service to appear for the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test before 2028. Officials are exploring options to ease evaluation requirements for working staff and hold the eligibility test twice each year to help all eligible candidates qualify.
Resolutions on Digital Infrastructure and Hindi
The educators' conference also culminated in the passage of two significant resolutions submitted for government consideration. The assembly formally requested the state administration to introduce Hindi language instruction in primary schools. Additionally, to bridge the digital divide at the foundation level, the delegates urged authorities to equip every primary school across Mizoram with dedicated computer setups.
