In a direct bid to curb financial irregularities and clean up its welfare system, the Mizoram state administration has formally approached church leaders across the region. Authorities are seeking active public assistance from religious institutions to raise awareness about an ongoing amnesty initiative aimed at detecting invalid and fraudulent family pension payouts.
Voluntary Surrender Drive and September 30 Deadline
Under this special campaign, individuals currently receiving family pensions on the basis of fake, forged, or legally invalid documents are being urged to give up their claims voluntarily. State officials confirmed that ineligible beneficiaries have been given a firm cutoff date of September 30 to surrender their Pension Payment Orders (PPOs) without facing immediate punitive consequences.
To ensure widespread outreach, letters were dispatched last week to the heads of various church denominations across Mizoram. The administration requested that religious authorities circulate the official Office Memorandum previously issued by the Finance Department on June 16. Church leaders have also been requested to read out the contents of this memorandum during regular congregational gatherings and Sunday services.
Role of Religious Congregations in Public Awareness
Given the deeply influential role that churches play in the social and daily lives of citizens in Mizoram, state officials believe that announcements made during congregational worship will prove critical. By leveraging these community platforms, the government aims to ensure that information regarding the voluntary surrender scheme reaches every household and community member across the state.
State officials reiterated that the primary goal behind engaging religious bodies is to help identify and resolve long-standing fraudulent pension claims effectively. By encouraging unauthorized recipients to step forward within the stipulated timeframe, the administration hopes to clean up government records, reduce fiscal leakages, and ensure that public funds are directed solely toward genuine beneficiaries.
