A deeply tragic incident from the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu has left the entire state in mourning after a dedicated state transport bus driver lost his life while protecting his passengers. Amidst relentless downpours in the mountainous terrain, a government bus suffered a sudden mechanical breakdown on a remote route, threatening the safety of everyone on board. Facing perilous conditions marked by heavy rain and landslide risks, bus driver Janagaraj made the selfless decision to prioritize the lives of his passengers above his own. He successfully transferred all the travelers into another safe vehicle and sent them away, but chose to remain behind with his disabled bus. Tragically, this noble effort to safeguard others became his final battle when a massive boulder and a giant tree suddenly crashed down from the mountain slope, severely crushing the vehicle and claiming his life. His supreme sacrifice has plunged the entire state of Tamil Nadu into profound grief.
Janagaraj hailed from Duratti village in the Nilgiris district and worked as a bus driver for the state transport corporation. On the night of the 23rd, he was operating a government bus traveling from Coonoor to Coimbatore. Conductor Kesavan and several other passengers were on board at the time. Due to incessant rainfall, the vehicle broke down near Periyyar. It was nighttime, and the location was surrounded by dense forests, making it extremely hazardous to leave passengers stranded there. Demonstrating immense presence of mind, Janagaraj arranged for all the travelers to depart safely on another bus. Afterward, he remained behind to look after his vehicle. The following morning, when rescue teams finally reached the bus and conducted a search, they discovered Janagaraj lifeless in the driver seat, still gripping the wires of the bus.
Reports indicated that Janagaraj was simply unwilling to abandon his government bus alone and was attempting to save it from further damage. During these moments, a massive rock and a colossal tree plunged from the hilltop directly onto the vehicle, wrecking it completely. Continuous rain and ongoing landslides severely delayed rescue operations early on. By morning, rescue workers accelerated their efforts and recovered the body of Janagaraj, subsequently sending it to the Mettupalayam government hospital. Fortunately, bus conductor Kesavan was rescued safely from the incident unharmed.
The news of Janagaraj shattered his family completely. The heartbreaking sight of his son weeping while remembering his father moved everyone present. The son shared that his father was the sole reason behind his education and his dream of becoming a teacher. For the family, Janagaraj was not merely the primary breadwinner but the ultimate beacon of hope for their future.
