A violent incident in the Indas police station area of Bankura district, West Bengal, has triggered widespread concern and political friction. The family of Sheikh Abdul Hafiz, an activist associated with the Cockroach Janata Party, was targeted in a brutal assault that ultimately claimed the life of his father. This unfolding tragedy connects a political protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi with a grassroots campaign to fix a dilapidated rural school, culminating in a fatal confrontation. Law enforcement has initiated swift arrests, while investigations into the exact motives continue.
The Journey From Jantar Mantar in Delhi
Sheikh Abdul Hafiz traveled to the national capital some time ago, participating in a CJP agitation held at Jantar Mantar on July 19. The following day, on July 20, a clash erupted between demonstrators and police forces as protesters pressed their demands. According to Hafiz, he fell ill amid the commotion and turmoil, requiring hospitalization in a Delhi medical facility.
After spending a day under medical care, he resumed his involvement in organizational activities related to the movement. Eventually, on July 27, he returned to his native village in Bankura. While staying in Delhi, Hafiz regularly posted photographs and updates regarding the agitation on social media. He maintains that upon returning to his village, local Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and workers expressed strong disapproval over his active participation in the CJP protests.
Social Media Posts and the School Campaign
Upon returning home, Hafiz allegedly began receiving threats, prompting him to stop posting content related to the Delhi demonstration. However, his social activism did not halt. He remained actively engaged in highlighting the deplorable condition of the government school in his village. As part of this effort, on August 13, Hafiz visited the Karishunda Paschimpara Primary School under CJP's Fix the School initiative. Notably, he is an alumnus of this very institution. The campaign aimed to expose the poor state of education and basic infrastructure within the school.
Hafiz shared information and visual updates regarding the school's plight on social media as well. This marked a turning point in the sequence of events. Reports indicate that later that same night, a group of individuals arrived at his residence and initiated a violent confrontation.
The Home Invasion and Father's Fatal Intervention
According to Hafiz, the assailants were armed with weapons such as lathis, iron rods, and axes. They launched a direct attack on his home. Hafiz managed to shield himself and escaped to the inner rooms of the house. During this chaotic moment, his father, Mohammad Mafik, stepped forward to protect his son.
The attackers reportedly beat Mafik viciously, leaving him severely injured. With the help of police and locals, he was rushed to the Indas Block Primary Health Centre. As his condition deteriorated further, he was transferred to the Burdwan Medical College Hospital on August 15.
Tragically, Mohammad Mafik succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Following his father's death, Hafiz has demanded strict legal action against the culprits. He emphasized that the underlying issue for which his father lost his life was rooted in the campaign for the school.
Police Investigation and Political Reactions
The incident has heightened tensions across the Indas area in Bankura. The deceased man's wife, Hasina Begum, visited the police station to file a formal complaint against 10 to 15 individuals, explicitly naming five suspects. Acting promptly, law enforcement authorities arrested eight people in connection with the case. Those apprehended include a local BJP booth president and a former BJP booth president. Charges registered against the accused encompass murder, attempted murder, severe assault, rioting, and property damage.
However, the District Superintendent of Police has rejected attempts to impart any political coloring to the incident. Authorities stated that the investigation remains in its early stages, and the complete motive behind the assault will only be determined after thorough inquiries are concluded. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured that strict legal measures are underway, emphasizing that police are acting strictly on the family's complaint and nobody will be shielded.
Simultaneously, CJP strongly condemned the violence. Party spokesperson Sourav Das stated that when ordinary citizens step forward to improve the condition of schools, resorting to violence instead of cooperation is deeply alarming. Reports indicated that CJP leadership has established contact with Hafiz, and a party delegation is scheduled to visit Bankura.
In the aftermath of his father's tragic death, Sheikh Abdul Hafiz has placed a significant demand before the authorities. He asserted that while the perpetrators must face justice, the very school whose improvement he was advocating should be upgraded and developed into a well-equipped institution dedicated to his late father's memory.
This core demand adds a poignant layer to the entire episode. On one side lies the gravity of a father's alleged murder, while on the other stands the persistent issue of neglected public education. Caught in the middle is a young CJP activist whose journey spanned from the streets of Jantar Mantar to his rural homeland. Police investigations will ultimately determine the definitive truth behind the bloodshed.
