A sharp political confrontation has erupted over the functioning of the election machinery, with the central government mounting an aggressive counterattack against claims of voting irregularities. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju turned to the social media platform X to present a five-point challenge to the principal opposition party. Emphasizing his stance, Rijiju stated that he challenged the party to address these fundamental inquiries. He further argued that a single-family political entity is attempting to dismantle the nation's democratic fabric and constitutional safeguards in coordination with external actors.
The Five Counter-Inquiries Raised by the Union Minister
The minister framed his arguments around past electoral verdicts and previous administrative exercises. In his initial inquiry, he highlighted that the election commissioners conducting the 2014 national elections had been appointed under a Congress administration, asking how the party was reduced to just 44 parliamentary seats under that setup. He followed this by noting that Gyanesh Kumar was not serving as the Chief Election Commissioner during the 2024 general election, questioning how the party suffered its third consecutive nationwide defeat.
Third, Rijiju asked whether incumbent Congress chief ministers intend to tender their resignations and offer public apologies for establishing administrations between 2014 and 2026. The fourth point centered on electoral roll verification, asking whether duplicate entries, deceased individuals, relocated voters, and undocumented immigrants should be pruned from official voter records. Concluding his challenge, he listed historical Special Intensive Revision drives spanning 1952 to 1956, 1958 to 1961, 1965 to 1966, 1983 to 1984, 1987 to 1988, 1993, 1995, and 2002 to 2004, asking whether those earlier exercises ought to be deemed illegal.
Opposition Confrontation Over the Chief Election Commissioner
These remarks follow severe pushback from Congress and the wider INDIA alliance directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alliance contends that the electoral watchdog's institutional independence has been compromised to facilitate voter theft. Moving against the poll chief, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge brought forward an impeachment motion targeting Gyanesh Kumar. Opposing leaders assert that the Special Intensive Revision mechanism was manipulated to purge legitimate voters from rolls and transfer voting populations across polling stations to favor the governing party.
Three Central Demands Put Forward by the Opposition
Opposition figures have alleged that pivotal institutional decisions were enacted by Gyanesh Kumar without securing the concurrence of fellow election commissioners, adding that untruthful assertions were placed before the Supreme Court. They contend that the commission's constitutional autonomy has been eroded under executive pressure from the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. In response, Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have laid down three non-negotiable demands: the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the revocation of the SIR process, and the complete abandonment of electronic voting machines in favor of paper ballots.
