Monsoon conditions across India are undergoing a significant shift, bringing heavy downpours to several regions while others continue to experience humid conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a new weather system formed near the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Wednesday, August 12. Meteorologists expect this cyclonic circulation to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours and further strengthen into a depression over the subsequent 24 hours as it tracks inland.
Intensification of Bay of Bengal Weather System
The developing system is projected to move in a northwesterly direction across West Bengal and adjoining areas of Bangladesh. As this low-pressure area gains strength and advances toward the landmass, it is anticipated to trigger widespread monsoon rainfall across eastern and central parts of the country starting Thursday, August 13.
IMD highlighted that rainfall patterns will play a crucial role in shaping weather conditions over the coming days. The active monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal location. Combined with the cyclonic circulation over the northern Bay of Bengal, atmospheric conditions have turned highly favorable for heavy precipitation across multiple Indian states.
State-Wise Heavy Rainfall Predictions
According to the IMD forecast, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated locations experiencing extremely heavy downpours through Thursday, August 13. Chhattisgarh is also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in select areas.
Widespread rainfall is forecast across several other regions, including
- Eastern and Central India: Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Western Madhya Pradesh.
- Western India: Parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, as well as Konkan and Goa.
- Northern and Himalayan Regions: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan.
- Southern and Northeastern India: Coastal areas of Karnataka and Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and sections of Northeast India.
IMD specified that the Western Himalayan region will continue to receive widespread rain, while Eastern Rajasthan is projected to experience heavy spells on August 13 and August 14. Heavy rainfall is also predicted for Western Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, alongside active monsoon conditions in parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Delhi Weather Update and Northwest India Outlook
In the national capital, Thursday, August 13 is expected to bring relatively calm and pleasant weather, though the likelihood of rain remains. IMD forecasts a partly cloudy sky over Delhi, with one or two spells of very light rain expected between morning and evening. Temperatures in Delhi are estimated to range between a maximum of 33-35°C and a minimum of 24-26°C.
From August 14 onward, atmospheric moisture is set to increase significantly across Northwest India. This will bring widespread rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab, marking a resurgence of wet weather in the northern plains.
Rainfall Data from Past 24 Hours
During the 24-hour period leading up to Wednesday morning, intense monsoon activity was recorded across several states. Eastern Rajasthan and Western Madhya Pradesh logged extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, heavy downpours were reported from parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Western Uttar Pradesh.
With the new depression system making landfall, weather experts anticipate sustained rain activity across eastern, central, and northern India, providing relief from humidity while raising vigilance for localized waterlogging.
