Residents across parts of northeastern India were jolted awake on Tuesday morning as consecutive earthquakes shook Assam and Manipur within a span of just minutes. The unexpected ground shaking occurred at dawn when most families were asleep, sparking sudden panic in residential neighbourhoods. Frightened occupants rushed out of their houses into open spaces to escape potential structural damage. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no casualties or damage to property were reported from the affected areas.
Magnitude 4.5 Quake Strikes Assam's Nagaon District
Data provided by the National Center for Seismology revealed that the strongest tremor hit Assam at 4:23:47 AM. Measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, the seismic event had its epicentre in Nagaon, positioned at a focal depth of roughly 33 kilometres beneath the surface. The abrupt shudder woke local residents out of sleep, causing immediate panic and shouting across neighbourhoods. Families fled their homes in haste before waiting outside until the vibrations subsided and conditions returned to calm.
Manipur Shaken Minutes Later by Tamenglong Tremor
Barely four minutes after the shaking in Assam, another tremor struck the neighbouring state of Manipur. Recorded at 4:27:25 AM, this second earthquake was traced to an epicentre in Tamenglong at a shallow depth of about 12 kilometres underground. It registered a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale. Despite its relatively lower intensity, the tremor startled sleeping households, sending people scurrying outdoors into open air for safety.
Afghanistan Records 4.0 Magnitude Event at 103 km Depth
Following the two seismic occurrences in India, another earthquake was recorded across the border region in Afghanistan. Striking at 5:25:10 AM, the Afghan event carried a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre situated at latitude 36.884 and longitude 68.864. This tremor originated much deeper underground, reaching an estimated depth of 103 kilometres. Although occurring at substantial depth, it triggered widespread fear among local residents, especially as seismic activity had also been noted in the region during previous days.
