Thursday morning began with the ground trembling in several parts of the world, leaving people unsettled. While Venezuela and Japan felt the earth move, India too registered tremors across parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Assam. The predawn jolts woke people up, and many rushed out of their homes and buildings in alarm.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quakes were recorded in the Pulwama area of Jammu and Kashmir and in the Goalpara and Udalguri districts of Assam. The magnitude was measured at 3.5 on the Richter scale in Jammu and Kashmir, while in Assam it was put at 3.7.
Pulwama Jolted in the Early Hours
Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir felt the tremors in the early morning of June 25. The NCS recorded the magnitude here at 3.5 on the Richter scale. The quake struck at exactly 2:36:49 a.m. Indian Standard Time.
Where the Epicentre Lay
The epicentre of this quake was located at 33.913 degrees north latitude and 75.095 degrees east longitude. Its depth was measured at 15 kilometres below the surface. Shallow quakes like this are usually felt more sharply at ground level, which is why even people fast asleep in the dead of night sensed the shaking.
No Loss of Life or Property
Initial information suggests there has been no report of any major loss of life or property from these tremors. Although the intensity stayed mild in both states, the jolts arriving in the silence of the night certainly raised concern. For now, the situation is said to be normal.
