Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticized the opposition coalition for organizing a simulated parliamentary demonstration. BJP Member of Parliament and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi pointed to the findings of the World Bank's India Poverty and Equity Brief, stating that credible international economic data thoroughly exposes the hollow nature of political posturing by the opposition. He asserted that the current administration under Narendra Modi has achieved historic milestones in lifting millions out of deprivation.
The Mock Impeachment Controversy
The opposition bloc organized what it termed a public impeachment proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging administrative irregularities in electoral processes and raising objections regarding the Special Intensive Revision or SIR of electoral rolls. During the demonstration staged in Delhi, controversy erupted over remarks made by an actor depicting Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Trivedi described the event as an orchestrated spectacle designed to foster institutional cynicism after repeated electoral setbacks.
Steep Drop in Multidimensional Deprivation
Presenting specific data points from the World Bank's 2025 publication, Trivedi highlighted the transformation that occurred between 2011 and 2023. Over that twelve-year window, the proportion of Indian citizens living in extreme poverty dropped dramatically from over 27 percent to just 2.6 percent. He underscored that multidimensional poverty reduction on this scale demonstrates the real impact of targeted governance and basic amenities delivery across the country.
The briefing also referenced findings from the October 2026 Poverty and Equity report compiled for India. Under the benchmark of lower-middle-income poverty pegged at 4.20 dollars per day, the share of the population falling beneath this line fell from 57.7 percent in 2011 to 16.1 percent in 2023. Trivedi argued that these verifiable indicators demonstrate consistent improvement in living standards across diverse demographics.
Favorable Standing on Global Wealth Distribution
Trivedi further brought attention to global inequality assessments, citing the World Bank's Gini Index metrics published in August 2025. India registered an inequality score of 22.5 on that index, placing the country fourth worldwide among nations with the greatest degree of economic parity. Crucially, that assessment established that economic disparity within India was lower than that observed across all constituent nations of both the G7 and G20 groupings.
Contrasting Philosophies on Public Welfare
Targeting the ideological track record of Congress leadership, Trivedi recalled past public statements by prominent figures. He noted that in August 2013, Rahul Gandhi described poverty primarily as a state of mind, while former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had once observed that money does not grow on trees. Trivedi argued that such thinking caused the previous ruling coalition to neglect systemic poverty, leaving 27.6 percent of citizens below the threshold. He stated that while the current administration focuses on tangible economic upliftment, the opposition remains consumed by disruptive agitation.
