According to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department, a spell of heavy rainfall will persist on September 17 across states stretching from northwest India to the central, eastern, and northeastern regions. Several localities face distinct risks of lightning strikes accompanying thunder and robust cloud activity.
This steady downpour will trigger a sharp drop of two to four degrees Celsius in daytime temperatures, offering much-needed relief to residents from the oppressive and sticky heat. However, muggy conditions may persist in parts of interior southern India and western Rajasthan due to subdued rainfall activity. Meanwhile, turbulent gusts ranging between 35 and 65 kilometers per hour over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have prompted strict advisories warning fishermen to stay away from coastal waters.
Northern Plains and Mountainous Terrain Experience Active Showers
The monsoon system remains fully operational across both the plains and high-altitude regions of northern India. Across the plains, including Delhi NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab, moderate to heavy spells accompanied by gusty winds and thunder are anticipated. In the mountain states, comprehensive precipitation alerts along with lightning warnings have been issued for several districts across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand.
In Rajasthan, healthy precipitation will continue across the eastern districts, whereas favorable conditions are shaping up for the withdrawal of the monsoon from western Rajasthan around September 19.
Vigorous Downpours Forecasted for Central and Northeastern Regions
Within central India, multiple locations across western and eastern Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive heavy rainfall, while Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh will experience pleasant weather punctuated by scattered showers. Turning to eastern India, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Gangetic West Bengal will witness robust rainy spells. Light to moderate precipitation will register across Bihar and Jharkhand, while heavy downpours will maintain their hold over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Across northeastern India, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunder is predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Overview of Weather Conditions Across Western and Southern India
Along the western coast, moderate to heavy precipitation activities will be recorded across Konkan and Goa. Conversely, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and the Gujarat region will experience intermittent showers and persistent cloud cover. In southern India, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep will witness intermittent spells, while light to moderate rains are expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Rayalaseema, and interior Karnataka.
Maritime areas and open seas will witness intense weather turbulence according to meteorological authorities. Northern and central sections of the Bay of Bengal will experience strong winds blowing at 45 to 55 kilometers per hour, with aggressive gusts peaking up to 65 kilometers per hour. Over the Arabian Sea, winds near the northeastern sector close to the Gujarat coast and the Somali coast are projected at 35 to 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts touching 55 kilometers per hour. Due to towering waves surging across these waters, fishermen have been strictly cautioned against venturing into these marine zones.
