Police in Maharashtra's Nagpur district have made a breakthrough in the murder case of 29-year-old Asha Dey, arresting the accused Ashish Mampiya. The crime occurred on a night in August during Friendship Day, when the victim was killed on the Kanhan River bridge and her body was dumped into the water in an attempt to destroy evidence before the perpetrator fled the scene.
Dispute Over Marriage Triggers Crime
Investigative details indicate that Asha Dey had left home with Ashish Mampiya on the night of the incident. Late at night, the two reached the bridge over the Kanhan River, where a heated argument broke out regarding their relationship. Asha was pressing Ashish for marriage, but he consistently refused. As the dispute escalated, Ashish murdered her on the bridge and threw her body into the river below.
Railway Trackman Alerts Police
A railway trackman who was on duty near the bridge at the time heard the victim's screams in the dark and immediately contacted the police control room. Upon receiving the call, police officers rushed to the location and conducted a search operation with the help of local residents. The body of Asha Dey was subsequently retrieved from the river and sent for a post-mortem examination.
Criminal Antecedents and Legal Steps
Further investigation revealed that Ashish Mampiya has a prior criminal record, with three to four criminal cases already registered against him. Police noted that friction had been brewing between the accused and the victim prior to the incident. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and examining the activities of both individuals leading up to the crime.
