Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a high-level review meeting in Siliguri to examine the birth and death registration infrastructure in West Bengal. The meeting was attended by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari. The discussion centered on establishing a meticulous framework for recording these vital statistics to ensure transparency and administrative accuracy.
The Significance of Robust Registration
During the session, it was emphasized that maintaining a precise system for tracking births and deaths is critical for monitoring demographic shifts. Reliable data serves as a cornerstone for effective policymaking, allowing the government to design and implement public service initiatives based on accurate ground-level information.
Addressing Fraud and Digital Security
In response to growing concerns over fake certificates and documentation fraud, the central government has mandated stricter scrutiny of digitized birth and death records. Several states, including West Bengal, are currently tightening registration norms to curb illegal activities. With over 25 million births recorded across India in 2024, the importance of maintaining an error-free Civil Registration System has become a primary administrative objective.
Focus on Security and Border Oversight
The review meeting is part of a broader three-day visit by Amit Shah to West Bengal, aimed at evaluating the state’s development and security landscape. As part of this itinerary, he also inspected surveillance systems at the Jumagachh border outpost. Strengthening border security remains a core focus of his ongoing engagement with the region.
