Political momentum has intensified in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2026 biennial elections for 10 Rajya Sabha seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party officially fielded eight candidates who completed their formal nomination filing in the state capital. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accompanied the nominees during the submission, extending his felicitations and expressing confidence in their decisive electoral victory. The nomination event served as a major political display of unity, with senior leaders turning out to rally behind the party slate.
Candidate Selection and Social Balances
The party finalized a strategic lineup featuring influential leaders across different regional zones. The eight candidates include Dharampal Singh, Ram Pratap, Shruti, and Priyanka, among other prominent party figures. Notably, the selection incorporates two women nominees to strengthen gender representation within the upper house contingent. At the same time, the list marked notable exclusions, as Hardeep Singh Puri was left off the slate. Following the ticket distribution, nominated leaders expressed gratitude to the leadership for placing organizational trust in them.
What Yogi Adityanath Said
Marking the occasion of the paperwork submission, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to social media and wrote on X to share his warm congratulations with all respected BJP candidates filing nominations for the 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Uttar Pradesh. He extended his infinite best wishes for their historic victory in the upcoming contest. Senior leader Smriti Irani also shared her initial reaction following the publication of the official list.
Contest Over the Tenth Seat and Opposition Moves
With 10 seats up for grabs, the arithmetic has generated intense curiosity around the final seat. While the BJP has fielded eight nominees, the Samajwadi Party decided to challenge the contest by putting forward its third candidate, scheduled to file nomination papers on Tuesday. This move has eliminated chances of an uncontested race for the tenth seat, turning the legislative contest into a direct numerical battle between the ruling alliance and the primary opposition.
