A remarkable display of quick thinking and humanitarian service unfolded at Bhubaneswar railway station in Odisha when security personnel assisted a pregnant passenger in delivering a healthy baby girl directly on platform number 4. The woman was journeying on the Bangiriposi-Puri Express when unexpected labor pains struck mid-transit, leaving no window to shift her safely to an off-site hospital. Recognizing the urgency, the Railway Protection Force, known as RPF, alongside personnel from the 'Meri Saheli' initiative, sprang into immediate action to manage the medical emergency on the spot.
Sudden Labour Pains During Train Journey
The passenger was traveling aboard the Bangiriposi-Puri Express when labor commenced while the train was en route. By the time the train pulled up at platform number 4 of the Bhubaneswar railway station, her discomfort had escalated drastically. The intensity of her physical pain made it apparent to bystanders and accompanying passengers that the situation was critical and required urgent medical intervention. Given the rapid progression of her labor, any attempt to transport her out of the station through traffic would have compromised both her safety and that of the unborn child.
Ensuring Dignity and Privacy on a Busy Platform
Faced with the immediate reality that off-premises medical transfer was unfeasible, the RPF and 'Meri Saheli' team chose to conduct the delivery directly on the railway platform. Ensuring personal privacy amidst a bustling station environment presented a critical challenge. Security personnel addressed this without hesitation by utilizing fabrics and clothing to assemble a makeshift enclosure around the woman. This fabric barrier shielded her entirely from the public gaze, carving out a secluded, secure, and clean enclave where the birth could take place safely and with complete dignity.
Successful Delivery Under Operation Matru Shakti
According to an official post issued by the Khurda Road Division on October 3, 2026, the intervention occurred on 02.10.2026 under the banner of 'Operation Matru Shakti' at Bhubaneswar post. The authorities highlighted the event on the platform X, commending the prompt response of the team at platform number 4. Inside the temporary enclosure, the woman safely gave birth to a baby girl. The moment the infant's first cries echoed across the platform, an immense sense of relief and celebration washed over the railway staff, security personnel, and onlookers who had watched the emergency unfold with anxiety.
Postnatal Transfer to Capital Hospital
Following the successful delivery, the primary focus shifted toward professional postnatal medical observation. Both mother and newborn were safely transferred from Bhubaneswar station to Capital Hospital for further care. Doctors at the medical facility conducted detailed examinations and reported that both the mother and the infant girl are in stable, healthy condition. The swift coordination demonstrated by the 'Meri Saheli' team and RPF highlighted the vital role railway emergency response mechanisms play in safeguarding passenger welfare during transit crises.
