The observance begins with waking up early during dawn, taking a purifying bath, and wearing clean attire. The prayer area should be consecrated with holy Ganga water, followed by establishing the idol or sacred image of Lord Vishnu on a clean altar.
Light incense sticks and an oil or ghee lamp before the deity. Offer fresh flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, and Naivedya to Lord Vishnu. Devotees should chant the sacred mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya with devotion and present sacred food offerings. Conclude the prayer service with an aarti. Depending on health and capacity, observers may undertake a waterless fast or consume only fruits and milk.
Fasting concludes on the morning of Dwadashi tithi. On the following day, take a morning bath, perform the morning worship of Lord Vishnu once again, and sing the aarti. Offer respectful meals, charity, and dakshina to Brahmins before breaking the fast with satvik food or fruits.
