A deadly industrial catastrophe struck the Harnai district of Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province on Sunday, where four miners were killed and five others sustained severe injuries following a violent gas explosion inside a coal pit. The disaster took place after combustible gas accumulated within the subterranean tunnels, igniting unexpectedly while laborers were carrying out extraction work. Emergency teams were dispatched immediately to extract the trapped workforce from the hazardous environment.
Rescue Operations and Evacuation of Survivors
Following the blast alert, a rescue team from the Pakistan Army reached the pithead in Harnai to initiate subterranean recovery measures. After navigating through toxic air and loose rubble, the rescue personnel retrieved the bodies of four deceased miners. Concurrently, five injured miners were successfully evacuated alive from the underground shafts. In view of their critical condition and blast-related trauma, all five injured laborers were transported to the provincial capital of Quetta for intensive medical treatment.
Fatal Methane Inhalation Incident in Duki District
Lethal gas incidents have repeatedly plagued Balochistan's mining sector in recent months. Earlier in August, a separate fatal incident occurred in the Duki district of the province, where three miners lost their lives after inhaling toxic methane gas inside a pit. That incident unfolded as excessive volumes of methane pooled in the poorly aerated operational section of the mine. As the miners breathed in the concentrated fumes, they rapidly lost consciousness and collapsed.
Fellow laborers stationed in the vicinity immediately alerted local mine workers and supervisory officials, prompting the Mines and Minerals Department to launch an emergency rescue operation. However, by the time search teams descended deep into the shaft, all three trapped miners had succumbed to asphyxiation. Officials later identified the three victims as two Afghan nationals and one Pakistani national.
July Disaster in Sorange Mine Claimed 34 Lives
The latest incident in Harnai follows the devastating mining catastrophe recorded in July in Balochistan's Sorange region, which claimed the lives of 34 workers. In that incident, an extensive buildup of methane gas ignited, causing a massive explosion that brought down substantial segments of the underground mine structure. Falling debris and cave-ins trapped numerous workers under thick mounds of collapsed earth.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), search personnel eventually recovered 34 bodies from the rubble following the detonation and subsequent structural collapse. Officials confirmed that 41 miners were deployed inside the mine at the time of the explosion. The frequent recurrence of such lethal methane explosions and cave-ins underscores the persistent vulnerabilities in industrial safety practices and ventilation infrastructure across Pakistan's mining landscape.
