Pakistani government authorities conducted a secret, high-security midnight operation to transfer 73-year-old Imran Khan from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to a hospital facility located in Islamabad. However, within only a few hours of his arrival and following a rapid medical evaluation, the former Prime Minister was summarily returned to his prison cell early in the morning on 21 August. This swift transfer stands in direct defiance of a clear directive issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which had instructed authorities to keep Imran Khan hospitalized under specialized medical supervision until mid-September to treat his severe eye ailment and associated health issues. Despite the high court's explicit ruling, government officials declared him medically fit immediately after administering preliminary treatment and promptly returned him to detention.
A Military-Style Security Operation Under Cover of Darkness
To carry out the covert transit without public knowledge or crowd gathering, Pakistani officials deployed extensive military-style security arrangements. A massive force of 800 security personnel, comprising elite Anti-Terrorist Squad operatives along with provincial police personnel, was deployed to strictly secure and monitor the transit corridor stretching between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
To prevent real-time coordination among gathering crowds or the leakage of sensitive information regarding the leader's movement, authorities activated heavy signal and mobile phone jammers along the entire transport route. In addition, to ensure that the public remained unaware of Imran Khan's arrival and to prevent media cameras from capturing any footage, streetlights along key road segments as well as lighting within specific areas of the hospital premises were intentionally shut off or significantly dimmed. Rather than bringing the 73-year-old leader through the main reception area or primary entrance, officials escorted him through a secret rear entrance directly into the medical examination wing.
Supreme Court Directive Defied and Rapid Medical Evaluation
The secretive nature of the movement initially created widespread confusion regarding where Imran Khan had been transported and where his medical checkup was actually taking place. The Supreme Court had explicitly ordered police officials to transfer him to the private Shifa International Hospital for comprehensive medical care. However, Pakistan Information Minister Ataullah Tarar later publicly clarified that due to pressing security situation concerns, authorities decided to transport him to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead.
Once inside PIMS, a rapidly assembled specialized medical panel consisting of an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a general physician conducted a hurried physical examination. The medical team administered an injection and, after a brief evaluation process lasting barely three hours, granted immediate clearance to send him back to Adiala Jail.
Outrage Within PTI and Protests Outside Adiala Jail
The abrupt midnight transfer and quick return to custody sparked intense political outrage among supporters and the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The party officially announced that it will file a contempt of court petition against the government for openly flouting judicial orders. PTI leaders asserted that the brief three-hour checkup was merely a superficial sham intended to bypass the Supreme Court's mandate for an extended hospital stay under the care of a dedicated medical board.
Distressed by the lack of transparency and denied direct access to verify his physical condition, Imran Khan's sisters, joined by provincial ministers, organized a sit-in protest outside the main gates of Adiala Jail. The family expressed serious anxiety over his safety and criticized the government for denying them permission to meet him directly.
Risk of Permanent Vision Loss and Ongoing Incarceration
Imran Khan's family members and PTI leadership harbor severe fears that continuous neglect in his treatment during his three years in custody could result in the permanent loss of sight in his right eye. Representatives of the party stated that due to inadequate medical attention in prison, the vision in his right eye has been reduced to just 15 percent. This alarming health deterioration prompted his sisters and party activists to stage demonstrations outside Adiala Jail, demanding his immediate release on medical grounds so he can receive proper care.
Incarcerated since August 2023, the 73-year-old leader faces a broad array of legal cases, including corruption charges and allegations of leaking confidential state information. However, Imran Khan, his sisters, and PTI maintain that all these legal actions are rooted in political vendetta by the current government. They allege that the administration is intentionally attempting to weaken him politically while deliberately neglecting his urgent medical treatment in jail.
