Amid this escalating battle between the opposition and the poll authority, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has weighed in, urging the constitutional body to present its explanations forcefully so that public faith in the electoral apparatus remains unshakeable.
Chirag Paswan Urges Poll Body to Articulate Its Defense
Addressing calls by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Union Minister Chirag Paswan remarked that when a vital democratic institution faces persistent scrutiny, the burden falls directly upon the commission to articulate its defense with absolute clarity. He underlined that an institution tasked with safeguarding free elections cannot afford ambiguity when serious allegations are raised.
Paswan emphasized that preserving voter confidence is essential for democratic stability. He pointed out that if ordinary citizens begin doubting the fairness of the electoral process itself, the consequences are deeply damaging. To prevent skepticism from taking root among the public, the Election Commission must step forward, dismantle doubts, and present its perspective with full strength and transparency.
Opposition Mobilizes Nationwide Protests and District Collectorate Marches
Meanwhile, opposition parties have escalated their street agitations targeting the poll body. Demonstrations have been organised outside the Election Commission's national headquarters in Delhi as well as its respective state offices across the country. Left-backed student outfit AISA scheduled protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, while in Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) led agitations across district headquarters.
Congress has planned an expanded phase of protests extending beyond state capitals. Directives have been issued to all district committees to stage protest marches to local collectorate offices beginning on the 28th. By mobilizing district-level networks, the opposition aims to sustain sustained political pressure and turn the controversy into a broader public debate.
Allegations of Internal Discord and the Official Rebuttal
The political flare-up erupted following claims that internal fissures had emerged at the highest level of the poll body. Disclosures suggested that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the two other election commissioners held contrasting viewpoints regarding the implementation of the SIR. Seizing upon these assertions, opposition leaders quickly accused the commission of compromised functioning.
Responding to the assertions, the Election Commission countered that institutional deliberation naturally involves diverse viewpoints, notes, and discussions before reaching policy decisions. The commission maintained that differing opinions during internal exchanges represent standard operating procedure within any multi-member institution. Furthermore, the authority reiterated that all formal orders passed over the previous year were the outcome of unanimous decisions taken collectively by the commission.
Congress Prepares Impeachment Notice Against the Chief Election Commissioner
Taking the confrontation into the parliamentary arena, Congress is actively working on initiating formal impeachment proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party has reached out to other opposition outfits to secure broader legislative backing for submitting impeachment motion notices in both houses of Parliament.
The draft of the motion is currently being finalized and is anticipated to be submitted within the next two weeks. Under established legislative procedures, Parliament does not need to be actively in session to file notice for such a motion, allowing the opposition to formally register its move before the presiding officers of both houses without awaiting the next sitting.
