Opposition parties have decided to launch a coordinated nationwide agitation against the Election Commission and central authorities, alleging widespread institutional compromise and electoral irregularities. The strategic roadmap was finalized during a key gathering of the INDIA alliance held in New Delhi, where top leaders resolved to take their grievances directly to the public through structured street demonstrations and constitutional representations. Outlining the program, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that opposition units will hold demonstrations outside district magistrate offices and stage 'Save Democracy' marches across the country from October 2 to October 8.
Parliamentarians March and Delegation to the President
The opposition coalition has mapped out an escalating series of actions to intensify pressure on constitutional authorities. Following the conclusion of district-level demonstrations, all opposition members of parliament will assemble on October 6 to conduct a joint protest march toward the Election Commission headquarters. Furthermore, alliance leaders will seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu during the second week of October. During this proposed audience, the delegation plans to apprise the President of their concerns regarding how the ruling establishment is allegedly attempting to compromise the autonomy of democratic institutions.
Rally Roadmap Beginning in the National Capital
To take the campaign deep into the public sphere, the coalition has resolved to organize five major rallies across key centers of the nation. The first mega gathering has been scheduled for November 1 in New Delhi, bringing together the alliance's top leadership onto a single platform. The remaining four venues and their corresponding schedules will be finalized by partner parties in subsequent consultations. Addressing the media after the meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that opposition parties have decided to put up a united fight to preserve the fundamental tenets of democracy.
Paper Ballot Demands and Allegations of Partisanship
The upcoming agitation will prominently highlight allegations of electoral manipulation, vote theft, and doubts regarding Electronic Voting Machines. The leaders emphasized a return to traditional paper ballots to conduct elections transparently. Levelling direct allegations against the poll body, Kharge charged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were using the Election Commission like a puppet, thereby subverting its constitutional duty to conduct free and fair polls.
Defending the Constitution and Public Engagement
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, emphasized the collective obligation of opposition groups to defend democratic safeguards. Addressing his colleagues, Gandhi said, "I want to tell all the opposition leaders that they are the collective defenders of the Indian Constitution, and it is an honour to work together." He expressed strong confidence that their collaborative efforts would bring about significant transformations across the country within the coming months.
Gandhi stated that the alliance has resolved to pursue its confrontation strictly through political and democratic channels against forces that weaken constitutional checks. Underscoring that democracy remains far larger than any single individual, he observed that the issues of voting discrepancies highlighted by the opposition have begun resonating strongly among the public, particularly drawing notable reactions from young citizens.
Demands for CEC Resignation and Allegations of Manipulation
Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee launched an aggressive offensive against the poll body and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, seeking his formal resignation. Banerjee maintained that the right to vote represents an uncompromisable constitutional guarantee that the opposition is duty-bound to protect. In her remarks, Banerjee alleged that 92 lakh votes were manipulated in West Bengal alone, claiming further that similar discrepancies nationwide crossed over 13 crore votes. She also cited alleged software interference and issues related to EVMs.
While these statements reflect the claims made by opposition figures, the Election Commission has routinely defended all its procedural directives and polling arrangements as fully adhering to established legal frameworks. Banerjee warned that if their core demands fail to draw corrective action, the demonstrations will be expanded significantly across the country. She confirmed that her party will participate fully in all scheduled INDIA alliance programs to safeguard the Constitution.
Absences from Key Regional Figures
Even as the alliance showcased common resolve regarding democratic processes, certain notable absences marked the Delhi conclave. The Aam Aadmi Party did not participate in the discussions, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also stayed away from the high-profile deliberations. Nevertheless, the leaders who attended reiterated their commitment to carry out the agitation across districts and state capitals in the weeks ahead.
