Madhya Pradesh's cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is holding a key meeting today, with the state government widely expected to give its approval to a draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a law meant to apply a single common set of rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption across all religious communities in the state.
Meeting held in Jagdishpur
According to reports, the cabinet meeting is taking place in Jagdishpur, where ministers have taken up the UCC draft as one of the key items on the agenda.
Mohan Yadav's 'one marriage' remark
Two days before the meeting, on 17 July, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav made a comment that quickly became a talking point. He pitched a provision that would allow 'only one marriage' under the proposed code, a stance that drew sharp reactions from various quarters even before the draft was finalised.
Part of a busy cabinet calendar
The UCC meeting is one of several cabinet sittings Mohan Yadav's government has held through 2026 as it works through a wide legislative and administrative agenda.
On 23 June, the cabinet had taken up a proposal to set up a permanent office for the Simhastha event, alongside a zero-interest crop loan scheme meant to benefit 24 lakh farmers in the state.
Earlier, on 11 May, the cabinet had discussed a new transfer policy for government employees, with a minister pushing for no cap on voluntary transfers.
Why the Uniform Civil Code matters
A Uniform Civil Code seeks to replace the personal laws that currently govern marriage, divorce, succession and adoption differently for different religious communities with one common code applicable to all citizens of the state. If Madhya Pradesh's cabinet clears the draft, the bill would still need to go through further legislative steps before it becomes law.
