The remarks triggered quick responses across the political spectrum, with ruling NDA leaders criticizing Kharge's grasp of history, while opposition allies rallied behind his assessment as historical fact.
BJP Hits Back: Invokes Statements by Indira Gandhi
BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash raised questions over Priyank Kharge's historical awareness following the remarks. He stated that leaders should thoroughly study historical records before delivering public opinions on national icons. Addressing the Congress leadership, he suggested that Priyank Kharge and his father Mallikarjun Kharge should review the documented history of their own organization.
Guru Prakash questioned why former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi referred to Veer Savarkar as 'Veer' and described him as a precious gem of India. He asserted that Kharge's remarks lacked factual supporting data and were made primarily to appease specific interest groups, describing the rhetoric as regrettable and unfortunate.
NDA Allies Advise Focus on Present Governance
Sanjay Nishad, Minister in the Uttar Pradesh government and chief of the Nishad Party, responded to the debate by emphasizing current priorities. He noted that trading allegations over past events serves little purpose when the electorate has chosen representatives to address present-day governance and development.
JDU MLC and chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar emphasized the importance of understanding historical context rather than stirring unnecessary friction. He stated that while Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and Subhash Chandra Bose followed distinct ideological paths, their shared objective remained India's independence. He urged leaders to learn from documented history and verify facts rather than creating avoidable public rows.
Opposition Support: TMC and SP Back Kharge Remarks
In contrast, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kirti Azad voiced support for Priyank Kharge's position, alleging that systematic efforts are underway to alter history and educational materials. Azad maintained that Kharge presented established historical facts, adding that those asserting nationalism should address questions regarding their historical record.
Samajwadi Party (SP) national spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand also supported the Karnataka Minister, stating that the observations reflect documented history. He noted that while Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was organizing people for the Indian National Army (INA) during the freedom movement, Savarkar and leaders associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh held a different perspective. Chand emphasized that these events are well documented in historical archives.
