A fresh political confrontation has erupted between the ruling party and the opposition over the overseas travel of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, at a time when demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar are underway. When questioned in Kerala regarding the reasons behind Gandhi leaving the country amidst the ongoing political standoff, Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor gave a sharp and dismissive reply to reporters, stating plainly that he does not function as a travel agent keeping tabs on others.
Shashi Tharoor Snubs Media Queries in Kerala
Journalists approached Shashi Tharoor during his visit to Kerala to ask why Rahul Gandhi had chosen this specific juncture to travel overseas. Declining to offer explanations or discuss the itineraries of his party colleague, Tharoor shut down the queries directly. Emphasizing personal autonomy and professional duties, he remarked that he is not a travel agent. He went on to argue that asking him about Gandhi's itinerary made as little sense as questioning why he himself had left New Delhi to travel to Kerala. Pointing out that every public representative has specific responsibilities and priorities to balance, Tharoor insisted he had no comment to offer regarding the travel decisions of others.
BJP Attacks Gandhi Over Four-Day Vietnam Departure
The controversy gathered momentum after it emerged that Rahul Gandhi had departed on a four-day visit to Vietnam while opposition parties were staging demonstrations in the national capital. The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly seized upon the development, reviving its recurring criticism regarding the timing and motivation of his private foreign travels. Party spokespersons alleged that Gandhi had simply left for a holiday after becoming fatigued from spreading falsehoods during the demonstrations in New Delhi. To press its claim, the BJP circulated a video clip on social media platform X showing Gandhi seated inside an aircraft reportedly heading toward Vietnam, demanding that the public be informed about the actual objective behind these repeated overseas visits.
Allegations of Regime Change and Secret Agendas
Escalating the political offensive, BJP leader Sambit Patra claimed that the visit was part of a larger design aimed at destabilizing the government. Patra alleged that Gandhi had traveled abroad to seek guidance from international financier George Soros on engineering regime change within India. He claimed that the opposition leadership was trying to learn how to advance an agenda against the country after failing to win over ordinary voters during electoral battles. Adding to the barrage, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari questioned whether the Congress leader had departed merely for leisure or to hold consultations with elements seeking to create domestic unrest.
Sandeep Dikshit Defends Gandhi's Public Outreach
Responding firmly to the BJP's barrage of criticism, senior Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit defended Rahul Gandhi and questioned the double standards being applied to his travel schedule. Dikshit pointed out that foreign travel is a normal routine for public figures and that Gandhi holds a constitutional office as the Leader of the Opposition. He noted that during overseas journeys, Gandhi actively engages with academic institutions such as students at Yale University, meets scholars and students across London, and interacts with global intellectuals on key issues. Dikshit also highlighted that Gandhi regularly takes questions from international journalists, something the Prime Minister consistently avoids, asking why such productive academic and intellectual engagements consistently provoke outrage from the ruling party.
