A local leader associated with the Aam Aadmi Party was shot dead in a brazen attack on Saturday evening in the border district of Ferozepur, Punjab. The fatal incident took place in the main market area of Mamdot town. The victim, 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, was targeted by four armed assailants who pumped bullets into his chest. A 22-year-old companion named Harpreet Singh alias Happy, who was accompanying Gopi at the time, sustained serious injuries in the shootout.
Car-borne attackers opened fire
According to the details, Gopi and Harpreet were traveling on a motorcycle when a car carrying four armed attackers began tailing them. As they reached the main market zone, the assailants intercepted them and initiated indiscriminate firing. Reports indicate that the attackers stepped out of their vehicle and unloaded a barrage of bullets directly at Gopi's motorcycle. Gopi suffered multiple bullet wounds to his chest during the ambush.
Hospital rush and local presence
Immediately after the shooting, both victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ferozepur, where medical personnel pronounced Gopi dead upon arrival. Meanwhile, Harpreet was referred to a private facility in Ludhiana for advanced medical care. Notably, newly elected Mamdot Nagar Panchayat President Vicky Maini was also present at the scene during the incident and managed to escape unharmed. The violent episode occurred merely 250 meters away from the Mamdot police station at approximately 7:45 PM.
Political connections and official probe
Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi was an active grassroots worker in the Mamdot region, and his father Balkar Singh is a former Congress leader with deep roots in local politics. Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu confirmed that the suspects have been identified and multiple police teams have been deployed to apprehend them. He stated, “Both sides had an old dispute. Election-related rivalry is a significant angle of the investigation. We will arrest the accused as soon as possible.”
Criminal background and ongoing search
The SSP further revealed that the prime suspect possesses a criminal record and has previously engaged in unlawful activities. Ferozepur Rural DSP Karan Kumar Sharma rushed to the spot with heavy police reinforcement to review closed-circuit television footage and launch a comprehensive inquiry. While authorities are examining potential gang involvement, investigators are primarily prioritizing personal animosity and electoral friction. The investigation remains active, and no arrests have been made so far.
