A harrowing dog attack in the Ghuman Nagar area of Patiala, Punjab has left a married couple severely injured after a pet Pitbull launched a ferocious assault on them while they were inspecting a house for rent. Within just four minutes, the canine inflicted more than 100 bite wounds across their bodies, forcing medical professionals to perform urgent surgical procedures at a local healthcare facility.
Sudden Attack Captured on Security Footage
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Patiala residents Ankit Sabharwal and his wife Shifali accompanied a property dealer to look at a residential premises in Ghuman Nagar. Security footage recovered from the scene shows the couple standing quietly at a safe distance near the entrance. The moment the property dealer unlatched the outer gate, the owner's pet Pitbull sprinted out from inside the house and directly pounced on Shifali.
Husband Intervenes to Shield Wife from Repeated Bites
As the dog repeatedly bit Shifali, her husband Ankit courageously stepped in between to protect her and pull the animal away. However, the aggressive canine turned its fury toward Ankit, biting him severely on his legs, back, and arms. Paralyzed by fear, the property dealer did not physically intervene and attempted to scare the dog off from a distance. During the four-minute ordeal, both victims sustained over 100 deep lacerations and puncture wounds.
Rescue Efforts and Emergency Medical Care
Hearing continuous screams, the female owner of the dog eventually emerged from the house carrying a small stick to hit the Pitbull, though the animal initially refused to release its hold. Moments later, two to three neighbors armed with sticks rushed to the scene and managed to drag the bleeding couple to safety. Both victims were taken to a private hospital in critical condition, where surgeons performed necessary procedures. They remain under treatment at the facility.
Police Complaint Filed as Mayor Proposes Breed Ban
Ankit Sabharwal has reported the attack to the police, seeking strict legal measures against the dog's owners for allowing a dangerous pet to remain unrestrained. Addressing public safety concerns, Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia stated that the municipality will consider prohibiting aggressive dog breeds within city limits. The issue will be formally raised during the upcoming Municipal Corporation house meeting, where a dedicated resolution is set to be introduced. The attack has intensified local anxieties over canine violence, following a previous incident on August 9 in which a stray dog attacked a young girl in Guru Nanak Nagar.
