Heightened security measures have been put in place for police personnel stationed along border areas in Punjab. In response to emerging security threats near the international border, the IG Border Range has formally issued instructions to the SSPs of Amritsar Rural, Batala, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot, mandating immediate steps to protect ground officers during their daily travel.
Civilian Clothes Mandatory During Travel
The directive strictly orders police personnel not to wear their uniforms while commuting between home and their designated duty posts. Staff members are required to travel strictly in civilian attire during their journey to work and on their return. This move aims to prevent personnel from becoming visible targets while travelling on public routes.
Identity Safeguards and Movement Protocols
The official communication specifies that officers undertaking personal travel must not carry any visible signs, badges, or items that might reveal their status as police employees. Personnel have been instructed to adhere strictly to personal safety protocols and ensure their movement schedules remain highly confidential, preventing unauthorized individuals from learning their daily routes or timing.
Action Follows Fatal Shooting in Amritsar
These heightened safety protocols follow a deadly attack in the border belt. Just last week, ASI Harjeet Singh was fatally shot in Amritsar. The incident triggered urgent reviews of personal security practices for police staff across nearby border districts, leading directly to the newly enforced commute guidelines.
