An 80-year-old woman was found murdered inside her own house in Sujangarh town of Rajasthan's Churu district on Monday, sparking panic across the locality. Her throat had been slit with a sharp weapon and a large pool of blood was found at the scene where she lay. The woman lived alone in the house while both her sons and her daughter live outside the state and were not present with her when the attack happened.
Workers distributing voting slips discovered the body
The killing came to light when a few workers distributing voter slips for the upcoming civic body elections reached her house in the afternoon. They found her blood-soaked body lying in the courtyard of the house and were left stunned and shaken by the sight. The workers immediately alerted the police without any delay. On receiving the information, Kotwali station house officer Mukeshchand, DSP Anuj Shubham and Additional SP Pawan Kumar reached the spot and began a thorough examination of the body. The woman had last been seen near her door around 11 am on Monday, after which nobody saw her again, suggesting the murder took place sometime in the hours that followed that sighting.
Who was Pukhraj Devi
Police identified the deceased as Pukhraj Devi (80). Her house is located near the Bank of Baroda in Sujangarh's main market. Pukhraj Devi had two sons and a daughter, but all three of her children have settled outside Rajasthan. Her two sons run an export-import business in Kolkata, while her daughter lives in Bangalore. With the rest of her family settled away from home, Pukhraj Devi had been living alone in the house for a long time and managed her entire daily routine on her own, without anyone else around.
Throat slashed with a sharp weapon, jewellery missing
When police examined the body at the spot, it emerged that Pukhraj Devi's throat had been struck multiple times with a sharp weapon, causing heavy blood loss at the scene. During the examination, it also came to light that no jewellery was found anywhere on her body. Based on this, police suspect that the attackers' primary motive was to loot her jewellery, and that they fled after stripping the ornaments off her body following the attack. As news of the murder spread through the town, a large crowd gathered in the area. Some relatives also reached the spot soon after and called Pukhraj Devi's sons to inform them about the incident.
FSL and dog squad teams join the investigation
Pukhraj Devi's son, Manoj Kumar Choradiya, filed a report with the police stating that unidentified persons had murdered his mother. According to Kotwali SHO Mukeshchand, FSL and MOB teams collected evidence from the crime scene, while a dog squad was also called in to assist with the investigation. Police have sent the body to the local hospital's mortuary, and it will be handed over to the family once the post-mortem examination is complete. Based on the son's report, police have registered a case against unknown attackers. Investigators are currently questioning suspects as they continue searching for the killers in the surrounding areas.
