In the historic district of Ajmer in Rajasthan, numerous ancient spiritual landmarks continue to command deep reverence and unshakeable community faith. Among these treasured shrines, the hilltop sanctuary of Khobra Nath Bhairav, located close to Ramprasad Ghat, holds a distinct place. The deity enshrined here is widely revered among devotees as Shadi Dev. Local tradition holds that paying homage and offering prayers at this sacred spot fulfills heartfelt wishes, with unmarried individuals receiving special divine blessings to enter matrimony without lingering obstacles.
The Seven-Day Deepawali Ritual and Festive Gatherings
According to the temple priest, Lalit Mohan, individuals experiencing delays or complications in finalizing marriage proposals turn to a time-honored prayer ritual here. Believers state that if unmarried individuals arrive at the temple seven days ahead of Deepawali and light oil lamps consecutively for seven days, they soon receive positive news regarding their matrimonial prospects. While Sunday services routinely see a heavy influx of devotees throughout the calendar year, Deepawali transforms the complex into a major annual pilgrimage hub as a vibrant religious fair is hosted annually on the hilltop.
Gratitude Offerings and Antiquity Predating King Ajaypal
Unmarried men and women eagerly await Deepawali all year round to complete their religious vows at this hillside abode. A steady stream of young devotees travels to the hilltop across seasons, accompanied by newly married couples who return after their nuptials to offer gratitude, present ceremonial prasad, and distribute sanctified offerings to visitors. Emphasizing its deep chronological heritage, the priest notes that the temple site is more than 5,000 years old, tracing its historic foundation back to a timeframe that even predates the legendary King Ajaypal.
Lord Brahma's Yajna in Pushkar and Sacred Legend from Kashi
The origins of this hillside sanctuary are intrinsically linked with revered spiritual legends involving Lord Brahma. According to sacred tradition, when Lord Brahma convened his cosmic yajna at nearby Pushkar, Bhairav Baba traveled from Kashi to take part in the proceedings. During that lengthy journey, he paused on this very hilltop near Ramprasad Ghat to rest overnight before proceeding into Pushkar for the sacred ritual. Upon completing his participation in the yajna and returning from Pushkar, Bhairav Baba selected this quiet elevation as his permanent abode, establishing an unbroken lineage of devotional worship that endures to this day.
